Code 44 ?? O2 Sensor? Lean Exhaust

I posted in the other form. I have an 89' Suburban that is showing code 44. I have checked the vaccumm lines. There is no cracks. When I go down the road it smells like fuel. The o2 sensor is new but it is showing lean exhaust. How do I go about checking to make sure it is not the sensor. Has anyone had this problem before?I really do need some help on this one.
