I got my 04 Tacoma double cab about 3 months ago and its got 3500 miles on it. I took it into the dealership last week because the break light was on and they acted all confused and said i break too hard and they never saw anyone wear down breaks as much as me. I DONT break hard but thats what they thought because im 19... So they changed the breaks because it was covered under warrenty, i guess. After i got my truck back though i flored it at a stop sign and the tries Burned rubber all over the place???? it did this for about the next 50 miles and now its back to how it was before i got the breaks changed, I floor it and it just goes. i have no idea why it did this. Well what im wondering is...
Does anyone think the breaks are rubbing or should i just forget about it?

No, don't forget about it. Could be your brakes are too tight and wearing out constantly. Don't understand why... Not having consistant power and wearing out brakes is a bad sign. If they found your rear brakes were worn, maybe it is a problem with your automatic adjusting mechanism.

Sorry if this is a really stupid question and insulting, but since it is a new truck for you...
You do know how to work your parking brake don't you? No chance you leave it on, even a little bit, and forget about it sometimes???

Do you treat your brakes real easy for the first couple of weeks when they are new? If not, that would make them strange and not last long. I don't know what the extreme of that abuse would do. Bring it back to the dealer again. Have then check it out and fix it.

Be nice to your brake pads when they are new - like your grandmother.

No its not insulting, as long as you give me advice i dont care. I have left it on before, maybe like 2-3 times but when i noticed it was on i took it off. I dont like always drive with it on or anything like that. And well, no i havent really gone easy on my breaks. I just break normal. But i dont get why it would be loseing power from me not going easy on my breaks. Maybe i should take it to the dealer and tell them i think i lost power sence i got the breaks changed.

I didn't spell it out previously, but the way I see it, you may have two related or unrelated problems. Accelerated brake pad wear and loss of power. I think they are probably related, but you never know until you at least solve one of them.

You also didn't say what part of the brakes were worn and needed to be replaced. Did they think all your pads/shoes needed replacing? or was it only the fronts or backs?

My question related to carefully breaking in the brakes has to do with it being a possible cause to your accelerated wear rate (as was the parking brake question).

Your power loss could be due to your brakes being on all the time because of some malfunction or incorrect assembly (parking brake question).

I dont think its from the parking brake being on because if it was their would be a light on the dash, unless its engaged and the sensor isnt working right.

I just checked the work order from the dealership and it says they replaced the front breaks only. I think im just gona take it in ASAP, I hate how you never even get to talk to the guy working on your car

The parking brake acts on the rear wheels, so a problem with the front brakes that is caused by the parking brake is out of the question.

It is possible that the shims in the front brakes are wrong. I can't think of any other possibility.

Alright, thanks for the help. How could i check to see if thats whats wrong?

Bring it to Toyota and let them investigate it. If you are overheating your rotors, that would be a sign that your pads are too tight against the rotors. It could be other things besides the shims that are causing this problem and they need to check out everything.

If they give you new pads, be very gentle with them for the first week or so.
