I might be getting to the root of my problems!

I had my '99 burb to the garage this morning and my mechanic said that my check engine light should be on since he is getting error codes on his computer. I'll get the codes tonight and maybe finally be able to get this thing running right. However, why is my check engine light not on. Has anyone fixed this problem before. Is it just a bulb and if so, how do I get to it. This burb is really driving me nutz.

If memory serves me correctly, the CHECK ENGINE LITE should come on every time you turn your ignition ON.It stays on for a few seconds while the computer checks the systems, then goes off.It also lets you know that the bulb works.I do believe that the instrument cluster has to be removed to gain access to the lite socket that holds the bulb.It is a lengthy process of getting the dash panel off to gain access to the screws that hold the cluster in place.I hope this helps to get your suburban up and running.
