Mass Air Flow Question
MitsubishiEclipse

I own a 1992 Mitsubishi Eclipse 1.8L. And of course it has a MAF. I dont know too much about these MAF's so I need some help with them. To me all they do is restrict air flow. What do they really do and how is my engine affected by this? If I removed the MAF what would happen to my engine and could I reprogram my computer to accept the change with no MAF? I already have aftermarket intake with the intake tube and I'm thinking about removing the MAF and aircan and replacing it with an electric supercharger with filter and I need to know if that's possible. Any help would be great!

your maf on a 1g tells the computer a few things
1. the intake air tempature
2. the barometric pressure (atomospheric pressure. the higher you go the lower the air pressure)
3. the air flow speed (how many cubic feet of air is going into the engine per second)
1g's need the maf to run right without it the computer just goes on a default air temp and pressure. it will run fine when you're close to that temp and pressure but will run like crap the rest of the time.
you can remove the intake silencer without anything bad happening. search on vfaq.com for directions
hope this helps

No, you can't remove it because your car will run like ass. All cars ever made need an air metering system.

you can try to remove it.. but like joe said, it'l run like an ass. MAF/MAS functions as an element of variable in ECU computation for your baby car to run right. without it ECU doesn't know how much air is coming in and how hot, and won't be able to input the correct amount of fuel mixture.
