I own a 1995 Pontiac Grand AM GT with a 3.1 Liter V6. Lately ive been having problems with sputtering. While you have your foot on the brake and on the gas at the same time it will sputter like crazy and violently shake the car. This only does this if there is a heavy load on it (like 4th gear going about 45 and up) when i let up on the gas its fine. any ideas? anything will be appreciated. THANKS

your TCC solenoid is sticking or the TCC disengage switch at the brake pedal is bad/out of adjustment. Try disconnecting the plug at the trans and see if your problem goes away.

next thing I would check is the fuel pressure. Your regulator may not be holding proper pressure and will cause a miss under hard acceleration or under load.

it only happens under light accelleration.. the shake fades under hard accelleration. My engine compartment also smells like gas when i turn the car off. However i checked the coils and all were ok

have you checked/replaced your o2 sensor yet? it will cause too much fuel mixture and your car will run rich and sputter. the easiest way to check this is to look at your exhaust tip and look for heavy black residue or go out and put you foot to the floor(while in gear) and look behind you for a puff of black smoke. If you do then most likely you need an o2 sensor

Im having that same problem where the car shakes violently in high gears. I was told it was the timing. It shakes when I first start it up and when taking off and going in high gears.
