1990 K2500 Tranny clunk/clang

Three problems with my 1990 K2500 Z71

1) I get a clunking sound when shifting between fwd and reverse. I am guessing it is the U-joint since this seems to be a common wear point on these trucks. How do I verify this is the problem?

2) The 4x4 engages somewhat slow (45sec - 70secs) and sometimes requires shifting between fwd and reverse and back before the light will come on.

3) When in 4x4 and turning moderately, the driveline seems to get stuck in places and/or making a clanging sound like ringing a bell or smacking a metal plate? I often think I am going to tear a driveline part to shreds when this happens. Any ideas?

The clunk between drive and reverse would be normal wear called backlash i do believe......nothing to reall worry about unless it is really bad then it is just a matter of shimming up the gears. As for the delay in getting into 4WD , my 96 Z71 was the same way...... might be the solenoid. When you have it in 4x4 and are turning , is this on dry pavement or grass/mud ect...... either way the pinging noise you describe sounds like the needle bearings in one of the u-joints being destroyed/crushed because they are done/dying/dead and out of grease. Do not try greasing them if it is them causing this noise.... they are too far gone to be brought back to life (speaking from expierence) just but a couple of new ones and change them. Hope this helps you some.
