Taking my 98 vr4 to the track tonight. I'm gonna see what I run in the 1/4 before I mod up my vr4. My goal is to hit atleast a 13.7 and I think I can do it even with a bad 2nd gear syncro...I'm good with a stick so we'll see. I'll post some results later tonight.

Unfortunately all I have to show for a stock 98 vr4 with a bad 2nd gear syncro is a 14 flat in the ¼ mile. I had an awesome launch but I didn't power shift it, which probably hurt me a little and I dunno if the 2nd gear syncro hurts at all, but I must say I still had a great time. It was my first time out and I'm definitely going back after modding a bit.

Plans:

Manual boost controller
Intake
Weight Reduction...prolly backseets and spare tire for now.
Catback Exhaust
BOV

Hopefully that will get me into the low 13s if not 12s.

get your 60' down to a 1.7', throw on any kind of intake, from ebay or some sort, a manual boost controller set at 13.5 psi (go up to 14 if you feel lucky, 14.5 at the most), gut your precats, and if your stock clutch can handle that, you'll be running high 12s.

i wanna compare your 1/8th mile time stock to my buddies run on that exact set up

60' 1.73
1/8 ET 8.34
1/8 trap 81.xx

when he was a bone stock 1st gen, he ran a 9.0 @ 76, comparable to your times. Grant it, he had an upgraded clutch in his car, but thats cause his previous clutch was gone, and i mean we pulled that thing out and there was NO friction material on it AT ALL. All in all, that with about $50 invested into the car, and if you want to include the clutch, about $200, he got some offbrand clutch from a buddy of ours that vendors products some. Grant it, all work was done by him, me, or another buddy, which no labor costs were included because we are nice people and help each other out for free

Hey Jag..just out of curiosity, what method are you using to launch?

I've been meaning to ask which method you guys use...I leave it in first gear and balance the clutch to friction point and the release it and gas it hard....i usually launch about 5 rpms..maybe a little less. I wonder if leaving it in neutral and then pushing it to 1st would be better or what? I just had a new clutch put in to the car as well, so i think i'll be ok with that clutch on those upgrades and if not...haha i have about 5 warranties now, it's getting ridiculous.

Haha, yeah that's exactly what I do at the track..
I've only been there once though, and did a few runs.
Since then I've been meaning to try getting the clutch to the friction point, bouncing it around 3500, and slipping it out a tiny bit slower rather than simply dumping it at 5k. I want to see if I can get faster 60' with that method. I've been practicing on the streets, and it doesn't seem as fast as the rocket-like takeoff you get with a 5k dump...so I dunno. I'm just looking forward to the next time I get a chance to make a couple different runs at the track.

Track closes here october 23. October 22nd is my birthday, so i'm hoping to run her one more time with my mods fully done, but i dunno if money will allow it. I really have about 600$ to work with and I know that's enough for intake, boost controller, and i'm hoping i can get cat-back exhaust. That combined with taking the small amount of weight off that i am should make me happy before winter. Hopefully i'll hit 13 flat this time.

no one wants to listen to me :disappoin
