Wow, a post from you that doesn't say something like "fwd r gay" and "get more displacement".
Anyways, I believe the weight of the GS-R is 1699lbs, and:
+Very moddable
+Can be a great track car (the Hasport K20 S/C'ed GS-R almost beat a modded Ferrari 360 Modena and the Signal Skyline on a track)
+Very reliable
+Looks good
+Good mileage
-High theft rate
-High insurance premiums, especially for a 17 yr. old male
-Interior isn't that appealing
I can't think of anything else.

You can get your son the integra type r. Its lighter than the gsr and it handles way better than a gsr. Its the 3rd best handling honda/acura. It goes Nsx/s2000/Integra Type R. I've seen them go for 14-20grand.

Integra Gsr
As for all around reliabilitie its an excellent car for a teenager. It will get from point A to point B in my opinion better than any other car. Its gives great gas mileage. And they last anywhere from 200k - 300k depending on how hard its drivin. All in all its an excellent car.
Now if your son is into building it up and racing it.
Its excellent for that to. Plenty of aftermarket parts, so he shouldnt have to much trouble with that. Only downside to it is the tickets and the jail time, unless he runs the track. Other than that they can be built to be fast.
Having an aftermarket Intake, Exhaust, and Header should appose to much of a threat to being fast and dangerous. Its when he starts buying Internals, Turbo's, Supercharger, or N20, thats when you need to start and worry. Unless you have faith in is abilities to race.
I see that your a parent, and I know how my parents are about it. So im just trying to be on both sides of the fence. Get him the Gsr he will love it.

reliable, not too fast (which is good for a teenager), and if he knows how to drive well he can get around 30mpg.

I still think type r is much better than GSR. They're about the same price if you can find them.

The GS-R is a good looking, decent handling, underpowered economy car.
They arent that hard to find anymore, so you should be able to get one for a decent deal, here are my only gripes w/ the car:
1. Theft factor
2. Wrong wheel drive
3. Dime a dozen
So if you have a garage for your son to park it in, and he's okay with FWD, should be a good car for him. I loved my Integra LS, and the GS-R is a nice step up from one of those...
