Well, the ECOTEC is a good motor, and 200ish horsepower is nothing to sneeze at, but all we can do is speculate on the reality of what will or won't happen right now.
Have you tried the Chevy forums?

Car Comparison forum.
I don't like the cobalt i think it's ugly, and not that superchargers aren't cool ,but turbo's are more interesting to me in 4 cylinders. It's good that chevy has a high hp 4 cylinder though.

i like the cobalt alot more then the Cav's. it looks fantastic esp with its rear tail lights. also if that engine is anything like the Saturn Ion redlines. then its underrated. that car making 200 at the wheels. not crank. so its basically a 230ish hp car. also it has a shorter wheel base then the ion since its a coupe so it should be more nimble. the only problem is that the redline is very low and if you look at the power curve it doesn't stop building power. by redline the power is still climbing. if they would make the engine rev higher it would make even more power. that car can handly take out the RSX type S. however it still lags behind the SRT-4. but very very nice domestic 4 banger non the less.

I agree, the Cobalt SS is looking very nice. I'd probably even take it over the SRT-4; the interior seems a lot nicer and it's got more useful features (the SRT-4 doesn't even have power back windows).

i'd take an SRT-4 over a cobalt, but i really like the cobalt. looked pretty nice on the site and i'm definitely liking the sound of that supercharger. i'll probably take one for a joy...ahem...TESTdrive and see what it can do.

I like what they are doing with it performance wise. I hate the way it looks though. Come on guys give it some styling, In the commercial with the vett it looks silly.

naw cavy guys like the cobalt, most people who own a cavy will switch to the cobalt once they decide to get a new car. But i would only buy the cobalt if they made one with the 2.2 Ecotec engine, it makes 170HP NA. Throw a turbo on it, and you can get almost 300HP. Dont belive me? Check out this link

-jayson- how mcuh would it cost to turbocharge the 2.2 engine?? n does anyone kno y they made the s/c on a 2.0 not the 2.2???

09-22-2004, 04:35 PM
sine the cobalt isnt out yet, go drive a saturn redline, its the same motor drivetrain etc...205hp is not too bad in the small fairly light car..still not as fast as the srt-4 but its a quick car for cheap
-Jayson-
09-22-2004, 05:02 PM
to turbo charge? idk, i hahna racing makes a turbo for the 2.2 engine, its a kit and prolly runs 2k-3k dollars. Gm is releasing a supercharger for the 2.2 ecotec cavalier and sunfire sometime next year, that will run about 2500.

I dont like it, and im pretty sure we will be seeing it around for so long it will seem out of place. Kinda like the current Cav, the base model is out of date and most are sick of them.

The only GM I would own is a vette, T/A or SS maro even then I dont even like the looks of the camaro.
GM has poor build quality and I just dont like any of their car's. A damn escalade is a high priced Taho with caddy badges.

That's cool if you don't like any of their cars, but the build quality has been steadily on the rise and it's good enough that I'd buy it one without hesitation, and I own a Camry.

i work as a valet as part time when i go to school and i can tell you that even though GM's quality is indeed goin up, it is still garbage. the escalade has one of hte worst interiors i've ever seen for a truck that price. the whole dash is made of one piece of thin hard plastic. you knock on it and it feels like a giant model kit. the new Malibu still has cheap materials however the design of the knobs and such is not dating back from 20 years anymore. the chrysler stuff is okay but too many parts are shared, and Ford is the worst out of them all.

I would rather have a ford than any GM or chrysler car.
I used to work at a bodyshop for GM and we would have brand new cavaliers that came in for a broken tail lights that had running problems/noises/a bunch of shit
GM is crap.

I currently drive GM...and would say GM is crap. Parts that fall apart, weird mechanical things. I also find it funny that when installing my headunit/subs I felt I could take the whole car apart with 3-5 screws, like building with legos.
Dont get me wrong though, Ill take a TA, Camaro, GTO, or Vette anyday...infact a LingenVette tops my want list.

The Cobalt SS to me is Chevy trying to compete with Dodge's SRT-4, however they seem to be trying to win customers by offering a different look, not by outperforming Dodge.
It's a decent looking car, it doesn't really interest me though.

yes chevy is trying to compete with the SRT4 and the Scion TC. They are trying to make it fast and attractive at the same time. I will prolly buy a cobalt SS when im done with my cavy. as for Gm being crap?? What no way. Ill admit the interiors do need a little work and flare, but they are extremly reliable cars IMO.

ask someone who doesent drive one what they think of them, no its not just cuz i drive a honda
i have a beater car thats a 91 v6 taurus its like faded pink and its slow as balls, i would rather drive that than any cavalier ever.

well i don't drive one,but i don'tdrive a honda either... i'd rather push a ford than drive a chevy... hah ... reminded me of an old bumper sticker..
but still, the older fords last forever... the newer ones of most cars suck these days... its true on alot of gm cars that when you take them apart it's alot more simple than it used to be, that's only because it's more cheaply made... i do body work (now that i've started on my j30, i decided to open my horizons to other cars) and i've had alot more requests for chevy and honda than i've had for anything else... basically you get what you pay for.
now i'm not saying that i wouldn't take a chevy or gm model car... i just wouldn't buy one.

Chevy seems to have upped their standards on interior, but I have to say Pontiac has improved 10x more. I'm looking at their new lineup, the Bonneville, G6, and Grand Prix look really good.

silverado's and some trucks are ok...mostly their car's are cheap feeling and have same interior features same radio's. Hell the cavalier didnt change interiors for what 10 years?
GM made their shit cheap, they may be trying to fix that but as of recently their cars were made like shit, realize it and accept it.

Of course the Cavalier is crap, it hasn't been re-designed in ten years. Look at some of their newer cars like the Malibu, the Corvette, and the Cobalt - all fine cars with modern interiors. Even the Aveo is good for its market segment.

The Cobalt has 205hp/200tq and msrp's around $21,500.
The Neon has ~240hp/250tq, looks better, and costs the same.
The Cobalt's tested 1/4 time is 14.9, and the Neon's is 14.1. I'd rather have the far more upgradable Neon.. Anybody read up on the 500whp one that some guy only spent $5,000 to upgrade? I don't think the Cobalt will see that kind of added-power/money ratio, being supercharged.
Performance-wise I would rank the Cobalt above an RSX Type-S, alongside an Eclipse GT, and below a Neon SR-T/4.
Ergonomics-wise I would rank it below all three, looks like a cheap ass interior to me and the ugly spoiler on them screams 1990's rice .

SRT-4's stats are 230 hp and 250 torque, but both are disgustingly underrated. In addition, it has a much better suspension, better brakes, and a bad-ass LSD. There is no doubt that the SRT-4 is the better performance machine, but the Cobalt is better looking, better interior-wise, and cheaper...

Too bad other cars are already more than a decade ahead of Chevy though.. For instance Honda has vtec which is 15+ years old and Chevy just now comes out with their own crummy variable valve timing, Ecotec
They should stick to what they know, which are the LT1's and other "pour a ton of gas into it for power" engines.

^^ how can you quote a camaro, i mean shit, i have never seen one talk.
the Cobalt looks to be a much better car than the cavalier, but they are both commuters. nothign more. looks liek the srt-4 would waste the SS, but to alot of people, thats not what its all about. Neons are popular with this problem and that problem, and i am willing to bet, where i live more cobalt SS's sell than srt-4's. and hardly any of either will sell. Gm definetley making a step in teh right direction though. expanding thier market. now all they need is to lower the price of the gto about $15,000 and bring it to Canada.

If a camaro could talk, thats probably what the car would say...and yes I would love to see a nice gto in canada followed by an evo, and just for kicks, a scion tc
I like the new cobalt, much more than the cavalier and all around more than the srt-4...It looks alot better inside and out, reasonably priced, and the ss has some speed going on...GM's engines have come a long way, but they still have alot of work to do. an rsx can hit 200hp na, but chevy had to supercharge it to get those ponies. Its the same thing with the Grand prix

No it's not the same with the Grand Prix actually, the 3.8 N/A is 205 HP, with the supercharger the GTP's are rated at 260. And they make damn good torque, which is about right for the 3800 motor. GM's engines? They've been making badass engines for years. A 5.7 liter pushrod engine that gets 30 mpg on the highway isn't to shabby at all if you ask me.

Agreed; GM engines aren't about horsepower, they're about gas mileage and torque. Yes, they may be a bit outdated, but that also means they are cheaper and easier to work on. GM's 3800 Series II V6 is one of my favorite motors on the market. 230 torque gives you very good passing power on the highway, and you get 30+ mpg while doing it.
