Ignition will not turn

After giving a locksmith a few hundred dollars to change a 1999 regal ignition I still have the same problem. About 80% of the time I cannot turn the iginition to the off position. The key cannot be pulled out until I can eventually get the ignition into the off position. It seems that there is not enough voltage going to the ignition security system causing the ignition to lock up. Has anyone else experianced this problem?

no, but check the wiring to the ignition switch (security wiring.) if it is not getting enough current, then obviously there is way too much resistance in the wiring. if at all possible, disconnect both ends and put an ohmeter to it. if readings aren't in specifications, then wiring is faulty. too much resistance will keep the proper amount of current flowing to the ignition switch.

i HAVE A SIMILAR PROBLEM. tHE KEY STICKS IN THE IGNITION AND IT WON'T TURN BACK ALL THE WAY TO RELEASE THE KEY. i FIDDLE WITH THE GEAR SHIFTER UNTIL IT RELEASES THE KEY. iT SEEMS TO BE MORE OF A MECHANICAL PROBLEM OR BOTH ELECTRICAL SWITH THAT ALLOWS THE IGNITION DEVICE TO RELEASE THE KEY WHEN PRPOERLY ACTIVATED.??? I thank both of you for your reply. Recently I have discovered that there is a security switch right behind the key cylinder that is malfunctioning. It consists of a small steel plunger type button that is suppose to depress when the vehicle is placed in park. I found out that it is very expensive for the dealer to replace. Therefore I drilled a hole about the size of a silver dollar under the steering wheel collar. When I turn the car off, I just need to place my finger iin the hole and press this button which allows me to turn the key into the off position. I noticed that this switch becomes extremely hot. I would think the dealer would correct this without cost since it seems obvious to be a manufactured bad design and a safety hazard.

Actually, it sounds like you're all having a problem with your Park/Neutral Safety Switch. When it is working properly it shouldn't let your ignition key turn completely off until the shifter is in park. A replacement part can be had for around $20 from AutoZone and it should be in stock. Unfortunately, I'm not sure where it is located or how easy it would be to install one yourself.

Did you ever get the problem fixed? I, too, have a regal with that problem.
