Most likely, your plug wires are in the wrong order. When the engine is running, un-plug one wire. If it doesn't run any worse, most likely, it's in the wrong place on ths distributor. Then, un-plug another. If the engine runs worse, plug it back in. If not, plug that wire into another "available" spot on the distributor. Very crude method, but it works. And I think you've got the wrong manual for your metro. They never made a 4 cylinder metro before 1995. 89-94 was all 3 cylinders.

Only US spec Metros were all 3 cyls. Everyone else got a 4 cyl option from what I heard. Could use a little more detail on the problem though.

I also have one of these pieces of crap. Had a similar problem. Found badly worn sprocket, half moon key and bolt on crankshaft. Replaced all with new and used bearing mount for relaxed fit on sprocket as well. Cured problem and has been running great since. I would check this if I were you. I think it happens a lot to these engines. The parts were readily available within a couple of days and it proved to be a cheap fix.
