Again, you're all forgetting one very important thing: American cars are NOT compact. Just look at them, they are fucking barges! 3500 pounds AT LEAST! Unlike the lithe Japanese cars, which top out at 3000 pounds even WITH two overhead camshafts and a twin turbo system.

Ahem, 3800 pounds +. Even the Neon has go to be pushing 3600 at best.

I would never take a corrvett over a skyline. I would rather have a the an import car over anything.

'97 Supra TT - 3505 lbs
'97 Mustang Cobra - 3404 lbs

hmm looks like not only is the Mustang less than 3500 lbs, it weighs less than the supra! Also, the japanese car seems to be way over the 3000 lbs "limit" you put on them

'97 Honda Civic EX 2Dr - 2460 lbs
'97 Dodge Neon 2Dr - 2416 lbs

wow, the neon weighs a whole 1200 lbs less than your ignorant ass thought it did, and not only that, it weighs less than its japanese competition.

Do some research before you decide to run your little mouths kid-o's.

You should research a bit too.

I really think that Sport Compact needs to figure out what the word "compact" means. Now if they has said Top 100 Japanese cars or just "Cars loved by Tuners", then yeah the Skyline, RX-7 ect could be included. I just think that it's funny how a 3600+ pound car can be compact.

Not every domestic car is a porker. The new Mustang GT is right at 3,500lbs, and that is with a 108 inch wheelbase! For all the "worry" about the supposedly huge weight increase the new pony was going to suffer it ended up being about 50lbs heavier.

A new Vette weighs significantly less than the new pony (C6=about 3200lbs) so it doesn't support that theory either. And, as somebody alluded to above, the Supra was no lightweight itself (about 3500lbsin MkIV form) . Neither were the fairly heavy 3000GT (about 3800lbs in awd form) or last gen 300ZX (about 3500lbs). Even the new 350Z is no featherweight (about 3200lbs...within a few lbs of the much larger C6 Vette).

The only Japanese "coupe" listed above that weighs significantly less than the new Mustang is the 350Z. But, every one of those cars is smaller than the new pony! That said American cars are typically larger than their Japanese counterparts, if not necessarily heavier. However, I think most everyone kinda' knew that already.

To add, all of the cars being debated over.....3000GT, Supra, Skyline, etc....as to their "sport compact" status are in no way shape or form sport compact car. And, the weight has nothing to do with it. (Although, I would agree that it is difficult to call a 3800lb car a sport compact)

For those who understand classifications in the classic sense of the term. Most of those are grand touring cars. A term that had some meaning before it became bastardized and glued onto Hyundai sedans. To put it very simply, this is what we used to call a sports car with a back seat, or any two door car with very sporting pretensions and decent size/bulk to it. (The chopped Bentley coupes are only two seaters but still GT's, not sports cars)

A few of the listed are sports cars, but not one is a "sport compact"...sorry.

Sigh, Kman and I were kidding about a stereotype that all American cars are heavy and slow.

*edit*
Did we every figure out 1/4 mile time wise which is faster? (Supra vs. Mach 1) Yeah yeah, 1/4 milre doesn't matter but I am curious. Same weight, but the Mach 1 puts more to the wheels, yes? (289) Just curious as I'm not all that much of an expert on Supras.

The Supra is definitely faster, but the 4.6L DOHC is a potent motor, so I'm sure with a good twin turbo setup the Mach 1 could keep up easily.

well kman, the mach1 is only rated as .2 seconds slower than the supra, so drivers race.

and sean s i would take any imprt car over a corvett too, now if we are talking CORVETTE thats a whole different story

No, I think the Supra wins by more than that...but if you have test results to back it up, then I can't argue.

And it was 'AznBoIRaCeR' (what an original name!) who said that, not Sean S.

haha no i was messing with sean because he asked why he would take any import car over a corvett instead of corvette

and i got the stats from car-stats.com

turbo supra is rated at 13.6 and 13.7 mach 1 is rated at 13.8 now car-stats may not always be right on, but for these cars they are pretty much dead on
