Trouble Code 16 - Low Resolution Pulse

I was recently on the highway and while increasing from 65mph to 75mph I heard something pop under the hood. One second later, my car stalled and the check engine light came on. I tried the diagnostic connector trick (short two pins) and returned error code 16 - Low Resolution Pulse (something failed to detect 4 pulses). I haven't been able to figure out what the cause is, and after checking spark plugs, battery connections, O2 sensors, and a few other things, I'm stuck. When trying to turn the car on, it sounds like when you're out of fuel and all it sounds like is like it wants to turn on, but it can't. I fiddled around with some spark plugs and a few things, and the car turned on. Accelerated a little and it died again. I don't know where to start on this, so I'm hoping you experts out there, can at least point me in the right direction or provide some suggestions. I just spent almost $200 getting myself towed so money is a bit of an issue :) Thanks in advance
