I have a 1992 eclipse 1.8L. I have heard of people talking about how they removed their air intake silencer. What does it look like and where is it located on the air intake? What is the purpose of the silencer and what will happen if I remove mine?

The only purpose it has is restrict air flow and therefore your car runs more quite. It is located the the end of you MAS (When you disconnect your intake hose from the air canister, it is the first thing you see inside the air canister). Removing this will only have an effect if you cut your air canister open, and install a K&N type air filter. http://www.vfaq.com/mods/wayback/fntair.html explains everything much better than i can

Why not remove the entire airbox and replace with a cannister filter?

i didnt remove the bottom part of the air canister as the filter will get more hot air from the engine, or so i have been told

When you replace the filter with a conical one, you won't have the stock airbox. If you are concerned with intake air temps on a stock setup, buy/make a cold air box. Look on dsmtuners etc for plans.

I acctually found a conical K&N that fits into the stock air box, so i cut it open, and left the rest for support

My car already has injen short ram intake, but with the stock MAS, will that make a difference with the silencer?

if you are aiming for most ammount of air, then removing the silencer will allow more air thru.
