Hi,
I just bought a 2001 Focus about one month ago (33000 mi for $7800-appeared to be in very good shape, all carfax reports clean, etc.). However, there is now a grinding sound associated with the steering and the brakes are squeaking a little. I'm more concerned about the grinding-it can happen when the car is not moving and seems worse when the car engine is cold. Additionally, the engine makes a whirring noise but it's not that bad and seems like it may be part of normal functioning. Any ideas on what the steering issue may be? Or if it's connected to the whirring at all?
Thanks.

I think I know the sound that you're talking about. My car does it, my driver's ed Taurus did it, my dad's Taurus did it; basically every newer Ford I've been in seems to do it. I've noticed that the sound comes most often when I shift from reverse. Sort of like a creaking sound?

That is something to do with the power steering, i've forgotten the problem specifically though. It's not an emergency fix as the steering isn't going at all, it's just a problem that requires attention when you can do it.
Being a 2001 you may still have warranty on it, so take it the dealer for evaluation.
