Distributor timing

Hi guys,
I need to adjust the timing but I think I have to disconnect something before adjust the distributor to bypass the computer. What is it and where it's located?
Blazer 92 4.3L Vortec

Thanks!

Yes, smart man for asking this because it is often missed.

There is a beige and brown timing wire coming off of the computer and going under the carpet under the glove compartment.

Disonnect that and then set the timing and THEN plug it back in.

can you set your timing other then stock to get better performance? what would have to be done to get it there?

Advance the timing.

I wouldn't touch it. The pinging and detonation will cause the knock sensors to retard the timing back again.

can you set your timing other then stock to get better performance? what would have to be done to get it there? this is my kind of question first, you will need to run premium gas (91 octane or better) disconnect the brown wire under the glove box and loosen the distributor hold down bolt. a timing light works well but it can be done without one start the car and turn the distributor clockwise i believe, but i could be wrong ....you will hear the idle speed up a little, if the idle slows your going the wrong way. YOU ONLY NEED TO TURN IT A LITTLE BIT, i cannot stress this enought if you go to far you will hear a clicking coming from the engine when it is under load.THIS IS YOUR ENGINE DETONATING-VERY BAD.you can burn a hole through your piston if this is not fixed you only need to advance it 3 or 4 degrees. tighted the hold down bolt and plug in the wire. disconnect the battery for at least 45 seconds.this is to clear any trouble codes you triigered by unplugging the brown wire..connerct the battery and go for a test drive. experiment until you find a good setting...****MAKE SURE YOU DO NOT TURN THE DISTRIBUTOR TOO FAR OR YOU WILL SCREW UP THE SPARK TIMING AND YOU'LL HAVE THE RESET IT***** this is not fun and unless you know what your doing its best left to a service station. let me know if you have any problems or questions-lee

That's true but you will have to run higher octane gas.

There are far better ways of getting extra performance out of an engine.

can't you just adjust the timing with the computer? were is the bolt i hold on the distributor? i have a coil pack type of spark. it plugs in from the side. are the bolts under it? can you tell me step by step such as where the wire is and where all the bolts are?

double edged sword.

On the TBI motors, the ECM uses the 0* reference to not only base the timing on, but also injector pulses. Fortunately we dont have MFI or SFI. With the EST hardware and KS thingy, the ignition is actually pretty fault tolerant, but not so the injection timing. btw, a 0*-timed 4.3 I have run on the scanner while driving and seen as much as low 40's for total advance (43 to be exact)

to be honest I would not go over 2* BTDC

so can i use a scanner to set the timing? its a 95 with the CPI with 1.5 OBD. i can get a scanner that you can adjust things with.

no, timing base on non-crank sensor motors is set via the dist. A scanner tells me what the ECM sees or thinks it sees. A programmer/reprogrammer which is something altogether different allows one to alter the spark, fuel, trim tables, which I dont recommend doing unless you REALLY REALLY know what you are doing.

Make sure you base timing is set as per stated procedure and be done with it.

No, you cannot set the timing on a 1995 OBDII 4.3L.

It is completely computer controlled and don't allow anyone to tell you differently.

I know, I own one.

DO NOT TOUCH THE TIMING

why not? i thought it would increase performance? do you know of a site i can get a kit to convert the fan to electric? also noticed that the intake temp is kinda warm to the touch. is there any way to cool it? some kind of gas injected into the intake? besides NOS. which i will never put in this motor.

Because it is completely computer and sensor controlled timing. End of story. I own a 1995 CPI 4.3L and can not change the timing so I otta know.

What are you talking about intake temperatures too high? Just because the tube is warm doesn't mean the air going through it is.

Don't start injecting crap into your engine, it will do nothing.

If you want a race vehicle, buy a mustand or a firebird of something.

Travel to s10forum.com and check out the 262 forum and search for electric fan.

Lots of info there.

well, register in the s10forum.com forums and search for it.

Is it hard to do that?

another thing about the timing? i was talking to a friend of mine about it and he was saying that retarding it would give better performance. which is better? advance or retard? i understand i might not be able to do it to my truck now but for future hook ups.

Don't take advice from that friend again because he doesn't know what he is talking about.

Why are you even worrying, you can't change it on yours anyways.
