sounds like a fuel problem. Give it a good tune up, air filter, fuel filter, pcv valve, spark plugs/wires, distributor cap/rotor.

Go get yourself a timing light from autozone, start the car up, and there should be 2 marks on your cam gear, when the light flashes on the cam gear, the two marks should line up horizontally with the block maybe even slightly tilted towards the front of the car if I can remember the si is a little different. And also, look down at your crankshaft pulley, there should be 3 marks by themselves, and then one white mark (towards the back of the car) on the pulley. Right above the crankshaft pulley there should be a crosshair looking extrusion from the timing belt cover. When you have the car running and the light should blink when the middle of the 3 lines are in the "sights."

i had a 1.5 motor in there dual point. well we converted it over to 1.6 motor (si) but left it dual point would that be the problem. he said that there wont be a problem but im a new guy with the hole car atmosphere.
