stroking the 305, a good idea?

Hi, i just recently acquired a 87 monte carlo SS with a 305 in it. I know 80's camaros also came with these and this is a high traffic forum unlike the monte carlo forum so i asked here. I was wondering if stroking the 305 would add power or what would be the point on it?

yeah it will add some power, but im thinking you have to change your whole crankshaft right? thats a whole lot of work and you can mess up something with the engine, it woul dbe better to just get like a supercharger instead...

yeh i was looking at super chargers and stuff but its carburated so its not as easy as the efi car.

Your best bet is just to drop in a 350 anyways. If your going to supercharge the 305, chances are you may want to rebuild it before to beef it up and once you toss out all that money you could have just gotten a nice strong 350.

they do sell a stroker kit for the 305 to make it a 335 or something like that. adds a bit of power, but if youre gonna be pulling the engine anyway to do the work i suggest just putting in a 350 anyway.

ok i think i will take this opportunity to clear up a misconception i apparently have. i thought the 305 was the same block as the 350, just with a different stroke; or in other words, the only difference between the two was the rotating assembly and the heads and intake and such. someone clear this up for me, cause i could've sworn that at one point someone said you could swap everything and make a 305 into a 350...

ok, clarification, the two blocks, 305 vs 350, are externally the same. that means on the outside, just looking at them, you cant tell them apart, they have the same dimentions, mounting holes, and all that. Internally the 305 has a smaller 3.736in bore, and different water passages, that wont allow it to be bored out to a 350's 4in bore. Aside from that small bore, and the smaller pistons needed to fit in those bores, the engines are the same. the crank, connecting rods, oil pans, timing gear, camshafts, heads, and intakes, are all interchangeable.
