finally figured out a way to stop the fast idle at startup on a 1988 cherokee 4.0L take out the tps moter on the intake, unscrew the plunger and put a very thin washer on the screw and screw it back together and put it back in. plug the plug back in and it now starts at an idle. no more reving up and destroying bearings. best thing i have done to this vehicle. :) fred bear111

1988 cherokee fast idle problem. takes a thin washer. if it is too thick you can't seat the unit in tight. unexspected side affect---my fuel milage jumped about two miles per gallon.

follow the wires that come out of the distributor. there are four wires in a loom. they go to a unit on the intake manifold. takes a star screwdriver to take it off. unplug the wires and remove the unit. it has a plunger in it that stays relaxed until it starts and then closes it. unscrew the plunger and put a thin washer (i used a small star washer) on the screw just below the plastic spacer. put it togeter and put in back in. if the washer is too thick it will not seat. this keeps the plunger in and it will not rev up when you start it. that is a big sore spot on these units and this solves the problem. hope you enjoy your jeep. i have been driving them for 50 years now and won't drive anything else. good luck fred bear

as you face your jeep look at the air cleaner where it goes into the intake manifold. facing foward underneath that are two sensors. the one that needs fixed is the one on the left. happy jeeping
