I have been offered a 95 eclipse with a 4 cyl. that has some piston noise. The price is under $1000 and it looks pretty good. It has 150,000 miles on it. Just wondering how much it would be cost to rebuild or replace the motor... I'm normally a chevy guy and was wondering if I can turn a profit.

holy shit a eclipse with a 4 cyl. .... sorry.
Mitsubishi allways goes about things the hard way (even spelling there damn name). You could probly fix it and sell it and make a litlte profit. They are so damn common i'm sure you could find a motor for a few hundred bucks.

I agree. The cyclone motors usually go for less than that. You wont be needing the complete swap. Just the long block. You'll have a nice turbo motor but yeh DSM do have alot of problems with the crank walk/drivetrain. Shit for a 1000 i'd still buy it and swap it. THen i'd sell it for 5000.

Yea but the thing is a 4g63 motor wont just bolt in to a rs or gs if that is what it is you have to change motor mounts and a bunch of other shit i've seen threads in eclipse forums about it cause my cousin has a 96 gs i sold him and its not as easy as a b16 or b18 in a civic...But yea just buy a stock block and put it in make profit off of it and buy you something better..I would probally not have another eclipse cause they are to heavy and too slow unless gst orx to play with..when i would get beat by every civic and beat every eclipse beside gstorgsx i didnt like it..which i was a honda guy to begin with it was a bad mistake to go from a honda to eclipse..But as they would say on the damn eclipse forum go check out dsmtrader to find a motor or some shit..Good luck later..
Edit: Also with a 150k i doubt you would get much profit unless the body and interior are cherry..i can maybe see 3Grand at the most..I had 2100 in my 96 with 86k all it neede was a door and fender and that was a total of 300 dollars to buy then i sold it to my cousin for 2500 with 89k on it..So if a motor and about a grand to buy it and your hours of labor for 3to 3500 might not be worth it unless you get the shit cheap..later

I'm sure it drops right in. I've seen how the mounts are located. He can use his existing mounts.

Honestly, you would be better off selling the RS and getting a GST or GSX. Or you could buy a bolt on turbo kit for you car if all you really want is boost. The RS and GS have the 420a engine which is completely different than the 4g63 found in the GST/GSX. The 420 is also mounted 180 degrees from the 4g63. You'd be spending so much money on STOCK motor/tranny/wiring harness/ecu/ intercooler + piping, motor mounts, relocated battery, not to mention labor on top of that. It's not as easy as a Honda B series swap. I personally know of ONE guy who converted his GS to a 4g63. He didn't think is was gonna be that much $$ but in the end....it cost him $13,000 (no joke). but since he already started the project he had to finish it. About 8 months later, the car had an engine fire and burned to the ground after Hot Import Nights.
Bottom Line:
Sell your RS, buy gst, gsx or Talon Tsi. At least with the 97+ GST/GSX you get extra things like power windows, better OEM ground effects, maybe leather, besides the 4g63 motor, which weren't available on RS'.

I'm still not sure what to do, but thanks for the info. I did find a '97 motor 2.0 liter w/turbo for $900. It has 65,000 miles on it and has already been pulled, so I'm leaning towards purchasing it... thanks again for the info.
