ok last night i was doing a lil racing right and at the red light the engine was doing a lil bogging... so i turned the car off then back on and it was fine... i went to a parking lot and was hanging out with friends ... about an hour later was about to go home .... i turned the car on and it was doing a really loud ticking noise then shut off.... so i turn'd it on again and this time rev'd the engine to about 3000rpm and took off ... once i got going the noise stopped ... but when im at idle... you can hear the ticking noise not very loud though....

what im thinking is the oil pressure is bad or something maybe... b/c i do have a lil oil leak.... anyone have any idea's?

Mine ticks sometimes in idle if I run it hard, but check oil it is probably a little low.

its probably the infamous LIFTER TICK that plagues our cars! search the forums, you'll find a lot!

muahahaha! the LIFTER TICK has consumed you as well!... hey, join the club!

My tick ws real loud till I changed the oil, it was real low before. Try an oil change.

yea, sometimes it depends on the thickness of the oil you use also i think.

On your next oil change, put in a bottle of redline - it'll help clean those lifters. Its a pretty common sound but its not hurting the car.

I've never heard a lifter tick, but i've read about them a lot on the forums. That's what it sounds like it is and if it's not hurting the car like yogs said...i'd just do the redline and see if that doesn't fix it.

mine ticks at start up. I hit the throttle and it quiets up. i think reving the motor increases the oil pressure enough to throw it on the bad tick.

If you want to permenantly eliminate the ticking..."TICK-TICK-TICK-TICK-TICK... Does your car have the infamous lifter tick? You can upgrade to the later "3rd Generation" lash adjusters which offer a HUGE improvement in oil circulation in the heads, thus virtually eliminating the ticking sound that incessantly emanates from the top of your motor. While the opening at the top of the lash adjusters in the 91-96 cars is less than 1mm, the opening in these is 3mm, allowing for much better lubricated rocker arms and a quieter, non-ticking "time bomb" motor. ;-)

Later-Style "3rd Gen" lifters - Set of 24 (DOHC Engines Only): $399.95 "

But try an oil change and use redline as yogs said and see if that helps first.

If you find the engine id code or whatever it is called, I am sure someone here or on 3si could use that to diagnose what year it was made. I know that helped someone determine the year of their honda engine in a thread I read awhile ago.

I have the same problem as everyone else. Does anyone think that it could possible be the headers or footers that could be doing it to the car...?

no, its just the lifters, usually start ticking when due for a oil change. i use 20-50 synthetic and i hardley ever hear ticking, even when due for a oil change

and again, its not hurting your engine

Hey, i've thought a lot about the lifters...yes, i've got a case of the ticks. I read on another message board (don't remember the name, but google search for mitsu lifter tick) and they said that some who have switched to the OEM oil filter have eliminated the lifter tick.

Anywho, i was curious was the STEALership would charge for a set of new lifters (3rd gen). I know 3SX sells em for $400 (set of 24, DOHC engines). Well i was quoted "the set of lifters for a 99 3000gt will run 1247.76 + tax." WHOA CRAP! This was from Don Herring Mitsubishi in Dallas. Not sure if other stealerships charge around the same, but i was amazed at the price difference between the dealership and 3SX. How does 3SX sell their's so cheap? Do they make them or what?

I got mine from a dealership and it was $340 .. at $14 a piece
