hello out there, well earlier i posted that i wanted to swap a auto c-4 tranny for a manual t56 out of a 93 cobra.... one thing i forgot to mention is i am actually thinking about 2 of them, one being the t56 and the other is just the world class t-5. i was origionally going with the t-5 but started to worry about the strenth of it and if it could hold up to around 325-350 ft-bl of torque. then i discovered the t56. but i guess my question would be can the t5 handle that much torque if i decide to race it every once in a while. and if not could i beef it up at all cuz ive been to several different tranny shops and they all say there isnt much you can do... but common sence tells me different, this is why i now turn to the experts... help me out guys....thanks

WC t-5 is rated between 305-325 ft-lb.
I'd go with the Tremec T-56. Once I have enough money thats the one ill be picking up.

#1 93 Cobras have T-5Z stock not T-56. Just mentioning if that's what u thought unless some1 switched a T-56 into a 93 Cobra.
#2 If you only race occasionally and your not on slicks a WC T5 should last you a while. Even if your on slicks you got a good chance of being ok.
#3 Your tranny shop guys are wrong there is a lot you can do to T-5's none of it is cheap I admit but when compared to the cost of a used T-56 and all the stuff to install it behind a 5.0 Fox it's is cheaper even if you went crazy on your T-5. Talk to Hanlon(Bob Hanlon's wife will make you laugh I guarantee it!), G-Force, Astro Transmissions

The install of a T-56 into a AOD Fox labor wise is not really any more work than switching to a T-5 but parts wise it's more money. Look at D&D Performance they sell conversion kits for a T-56 into a Fox so you can see the extra parts needed. Also you need to have your driveshaft shortened 1/2" inch(something like that).

The T-56 into a manual 5spd is less work im guessing. Reason I ask is because soon im going to put a T-56 in my 88 which is a T-5.

A T-56 is tempting to be able to switch to 3.73 gears and still keep a decent hwy fuel economy.

i have a T-5 and im running about350HP and the tranny i have now is holding up good i even ran some miky ET and had no problems. how ever i have been very kind to this tranny and befor the tranny i had now i had twisted my imput shaft and mest up some gears but i really was hard on it. so the T-5z should hold up no prob. i hear there are safe to run on slicks till low 11s. thats what they told me when i was replacing my first tranny.

i speaka da enlish weller =P
you have to have a special bellhousing, and in some applications the clutch is different, in terms of input shaft spline. depends where the tranny came from. call D&D performance (www.ddperformance.com).

Ever look at the ratio's of a T-56/T-5? The "extra" gear is in between a T-5's 4th and 5th, so your RPM's wouldn't change.
Also, a '93-95 Cobra tranny isn't quite Z-spec, they are a standard T-5 with a bigger input bearing and phosphate coated gears. Still weak.
I'm switching to a TKO500.
All you need to switch it is an 87-93 style clutch fork and a Tremec-specific clutch. Some places recommend a 3/8" spacer for the driveshaft, but I've been told more than once that the slip yoke accomodates that 3/8" very well.

Are you serious man?? So what's the point of it then if 6th gear is really 5th gear on the T5??
Also another question.
Is it possible to get aftermarket gears with different ratios?
For example, the stock 1st gear is 3.35:1 ratio, I would like to switch this to something with a higher ratio, like 4:1. Is this possible??
Also, I'd like to switch 5th Gear to 0.50:1 from the stock 0.68:1.
Is any of this possible? I've been looking for info on the net but have not had any luck with finding info.

OK right from D&D's site
T-56:
1st-2.97
2nd-2.07
3rd-1.43
4th-1.1
5th-.80
6th-.62
T-5 (according to Ford's literature)
1st-3.35
2nd-1.99
3rd-1.33
4th-1.0
5th-.68
TKO 500 (from Brothers Performance website)
1st-3.27
2nd-1.97
3rd-1.34
4th-1.0
5th-1.68--EDIT Typo...Meant .68
D&D also sells a Viper-spec T-56 which has the .50 6th gear, but the expense of that isn't really attractive when it only holds 50 lb ft more than a TKO500, and I'll never bust the TKO.
Personally I don't mind cruising at 2600 RPM. My motor is balanced and built to handle 7000 RPM, so... Besides, I'm right in the bottom of my torque curve there, so I don't even downshift for pesky ricers on the interstate, I just stomp on the gas.

ALL of these questions can be answered by D&D performance. call them, email them............something you'll get your answer for Parts, swaps, whatever you need they know and they have. They gave me everything i needed to bolt up a tko600 tranny to a 90gt
