LSD for 04 tacoma

im looking into buying one for my taco its a TRD v6 prerunner double cab does anyone know if there is one for me or if i could even install one in my truck? thanks

Your TRD Tacoma comes from the factory with an electronic locking differential. In order to install an LSD you would need to remove the locker first. That can be done but first you need to weigh your options.

• If you remove the locker, your off road performance will be severely limited (Your truck is 2wd to begin with so maybe that's not a big deal for you?)

• Installing an LSD will help the on road performance a lot but in order for it to help you off road it will need to be a Torsen LSD. Which is still not as good off road as the factory locker. (The Detroit Truetrac is the best Torsen LSD available for Tacoma's) Torsen LSD's are better than clutch type LSD's because they use gears and do not wear out.

• There are differentials that are both an LSD and a full locker but none are available for Toyota's. So you will have to decide which is more important to you, on or off road performance.

If you decide to remove the locker and install an LSD, the best way to accomplish this would be to find someone (won't be hard) with a non-locker equipped Tacoma and swap your complete axle ECU and wiring harness. You could sell your complete axle and locker w/ accessories ($1500+ for a brand new '04) for almost enough to pay for a non-TRD axle, a Truetrac and installation most likely.
