Just bought it. 34,000 miles. Engine light is staying on. Filled it with gas and now it tells me it's empty! I wanted one of the last of the Cherokees. What am I in for Jeep owners? Help!

I bought a '92 cherokee laredo almost five months ago and love it... only thing is to keep up with maintenance. The light being on can be checked at any autozone, advance, etc for no charge. The gas gauge being wrong is usually the sending unit which can usually go bad due to wear or water (possibly other contaminates in gas) and i located with the pump in the top end of the tank. If it is bad, it may need to be replaced (best to replace the pump and sender together. Otherwise, I say congrats on your purchase. I love jeeps and am in the middle of a project with mine. Good luck with yours.

Thanks for the info! It doesn't sound quite as bad as I thought it was going to be. I take it that Jeeps take a lot of maintenance, but in the long run "take a lickin' and keep on tickin'"! Good luck!

If you plan on keeping it, I suggest you get a copy of the service manual and parts list. You may be able to find free copies (in PDF format) somewhere on the web (I found ones for my '88). If not, they come up for sale on eBay occasionally. Chilton's and Haynes manuals are OK for routine stuff (I have a Haynes), but they lack certain detail available only in the factory manual.

in most cases the light will come on if you don't click the cap three times when you fill up.. just so you know and don't dump money on sensors
