hi folks, first post here, hopefully someone can assist.
I have a 97 tahoe, love it, been a great truck, looks like it just left the factory after 122k of hard towing, hauling and working its butt off at my salvage yard.
never failed me, till last week, LOL we were hit hard by hurricane charley, we have 5 ACRES of massive oak trees down that insurance wont cover, nice eh?
so three weeks of chainswaing, hauling trees out of our horse pasture (and trying to get a roof back over our heads!) has taken its toll on the old "hoe"
i was in our pasture pulling trees to the front for debris removal and bogged down in the saturated ground, not surprising since we have had nothing but torrential downpours and the peace river nearby is SEVENTEEN feet over its highest ever recorded crest level, folks, florida is one big mess right now! i went to hit 4WD (its a 97 tahoe full size two door, 350 with some mods, stock 4wd system, electronic shift) and nothing happened. yikeys! got pulled out and went to work, got it to engage, seemed to be fine, next day was travelling to ft lauderdale and it started lighting up 2 wheel, 4 high, 4 low, no special sequence, just flashing randomly.
ok, next the switch went completley dead, figuring it was the switch i replaced it, damn it! still no 4wd but it does light up when you start the truck now, then goes blank
back under the truck, went to clean connectors and such, on the front passenger side of the transfer case i found the actuator electonic plug filled with oil inside, im assuming the actuator went bad and i KNOW there shouldnt be oil in there.
has ANYONE ran into this? before i lay out 350 bucks or more for the actuator i was PRAYING that a forum member ran into this and can ok the repairs! any help would be greatly apprecaited!
right now 4wd is NOT a luxury, its a neccasity, we took out EIGHT full size dump truck loads and have only gotten halfway through the mess.
still love my tahoe, im looking into a quad cab deisel before old charley came and ruined our year...sigh...
anyone got any tips? ran into this problem? please respond asap with any hints, forewarnings, things i should look for etc, please, really need to get 4wd back asap! many thanks! joey donuts

Well I have a 98 LT tahoe and when I bought it last Dec. the lights on the buttons went out, but if you still push the buttons they still work.. You just got to listen good when you push the button to tell if it locks in or not.........

hi beua, naw, went through all that, when it was dying its last few breaths you could hear the front axle actuator kicking in and out, after that it didnt light up at all, hence why i thought the switch was sending bad signals.
switch was replaced with a new factory one. hoping front actuator is fine and was just getting a bad signal. you got a 4 door or 2 door? wasnt 98 the last year of the two door?
anywise, if anyone else see's this post that has had the actuator on the transaxle go bad, or gotten oil in the plug end for that actuator let me know, thanks for the response, Joey

Is the transfer case overfilled? There is a check/fill plug on the rear of the t-case. You can check to see if there are any t-case codes by grounding post 13 on the data link connector(obd2 port) and turning the ignition switch on and counting how many times the 4x4 lights flash. There are only 4 possible codes.
Important: Do not ground any post other than 13(posts 4 and 5 are grounds) as the other systems may fail

hi jeremy, thanks! i was wondering why no codes or ses lights were showing, so even with no ses or engine lights my computer should be able to tell me yay or nay that my transfer case actuator is bad? thanks again! j donuts.
