Where's all the Studebakers?

I was wondering why the first American musclecar doesn't have it's own section on the forums? We gotta change that! We've been doing pretty good, (well, almost undefeated), at the Pure Stock Muscle Car Drags in Stanton, MI for the last few years. In fact, it's going on this coming weekend! Did anyone see the shootout on "My Classic Cars", (that they came to the PSMCD especially to shoot), between the 427 Yenko Camaro and the '64 Studebaker Challenger? Awesome......

Anyway, I hope I see more Studebaker musclecar owners here!

I went out to the website you point to. Didn't find anything there about muscle cars. I looked at the history of Studie racing. Ever see one of the V-16s they made in the early '30s? Interesting approach, as it looks like two of the straight 8s attached in the middle, with one bank of cylinders straight up, and the other laid over at an angle. I saw one on a farm in Idaho, many years ago. I would imagine it made a ton of torque!
I'm curous about your statement regarding the "first muscle car". Studebaker never made one, from what I can determine. I've looked in "The Chronicle of the American Automobile", and could only find the Avanti and a couple of different iterations of "Hawk" that had R4 in them. While it was powerful, it certainly wasn't a match for the 389 in '64. What car are you refering to? Did it pre-date the GTO?
I know how things can get misconstrued, as Barracuda pre-dated Mustang by 5 months, yet it's called a "Pony Car", not a "Fishy Car" (:-

I hate to be a know- it- all, but I thought the introduction of the Barracuda pre -dated the Mustang by two weeks.

Still, I understand your point.

As for the first muscle car, the GTO is the first that combined the performance with the right marketing image.
However, muscle cars can be defined by the placement of the largest engines from the full size cars into the lighter, intermediate car chassis.
GM and Ford did this with their muscle cars.
However, the first post war muscle car was the 1949 Oldsmoble 88, which had the new 303 cid V8 from the larger 98 chassis installed.

Otherwise, if this forum has a Deusenberg (!) forum, these should be a place for Studies. Most people will never even see a Deusenberg, much less own one but there are still many thousands of Studies out there.
