Freind of mine broke his timing belt on his 89 SI. What are the chances he didn't bend the valves or damage a piston? I broke mine on an 85 MR2 with no damage, not sure about Hondas Thanks

There is a chance it will just have to be opened up and look at it, you were a lucky on with the mr2 its just chance that when it brakes everythings lined up perfectly, same for any motor.

not necessarily... It depends on what type of engine it is... if it is an interferance engine and the timing belt breaks.... you could be in trouble... I have a 90 corolla it is interferance... if that belt breaks... something will probably bust... but I also have a 1995 ford escort... with the 1.9l sohc engine that is a non-interferance engine... the timing belt has broken in this car before... but nothing to worry about...

I have broke a timing belt in my previous 3rd gen and it didnt cause any problems. But that doesnt mean anything. You will have to pull it apart to find out friend.

I had an '88 Si that the timing belt broke on, and I had to get a new cylinder head 'cause it bent the valves. Your friend might get lucky though.

P.S. Don't mind the avatar... I still like Hondas, I just drive a Nissan!

IF YOU GET COMPRESSION PRESSURE OF MORE THAN 100 PSI ON ALL CYLINDERS, THAT MEANS ENGINE HAS NO DAMAGE.

I can't believe I did not think of that.
THANKS

you dont need to remove the camshaft, just turn the motor over till the valves are closed for each piston as you test that cylinder, aslong as the cylinders are within 10% of each other you should be ok...
