i believe you are thinking of control arms. you have two rear control arms that attach the frame to the axle on each side. you only have one torque arm that mounts on the front of the axle, by the pinion and runs up along the driveshaft and anchors to the transmission mount...

how hard is it to install?

Chevyracincamaro
09-16-2004, 04:53 PM
not hard at all. i dont know exactly how the eighter cars are, but the most difficult parts are getting the old one out of the bushing on the transmission mount (a good hammer should do the trick) and getting your pinion angle right so that the arm will slide on. i pulled my torque arm in about 30 min when i was swapping my axle...

do i have to do anything else like change my axle too or no? and all you use is like 2 jacks or what?

Chevyracincamaro

but dude, for the price you are paying there you can get an adjustable torque arm from BMR fabrication...

also will i notice a small or big difference in speed increase or heandling from the torque arm?

DiabloGT

can you give me the link to that BMR one?
or how is this one: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=7922227232&category=33583&sspagename=WDVW

you support the back half on jackstands. if you have an impact wrench it will help you to get the nuts off the bolts that hold the arm on. use a screw driver to pry the torque arm off the axle. you might have to drop the trans mount, i dont know about the eighter cars. use a floor jack under the axle to lift it up to get the pinion angle right, slide the new arm back on and bolt her in...

thats the abridged version

I say get the Adj. ones that are frame mounted, those are the best for traction... BMR or Spohn

a new torque arm will only help you trasnfer a little power to the ground if anything. I think they are more for guys who have beefed up their cars and have more power. The stock stamped unit sucks and twists but your not going to really be able to handle any better with the torque arm.

the factory arms are great at diffusing energy into the chassis, thats almost what they are designed to do to give a smoother rider. i think you will notice a difference, it might not be huge, but you'll notice a difference. it wont necesarilly go faster, but it should launch a little harder...

What the Torque Arm does is keep the driveshaft from flexing, and keep the rearend from twisting up under WOT. If you buy an adjustable TA from BMR, you will have to readjust your pinion angle. When you disconnect the stock TA, the rear axel will turn up. The mounting flange on the BMR unit is 3/8" @ the rear, so you will also need longer bolts to go through the pumpkin area.

Hope this helps you out.
