cd player installation question

okay, i need some help. here's the deal. i have a 95 escort wagon. i just took out the original stereo and put in a cd player. first mistake, i cut the original wire harness off. i was planning on just wiring everything myself vs. buying a new harness set.

everything is working correctly. all speakers are wired right, but i'm having trouble with my dash and tail lights. with the car on and headlights off, my dash lights are on - including the "ac" light on the vent control. (the ac light is on even if the ac isn't.) when i turn on my headlights the dash light goes off....so if i'm driving at night i can't see my dash meters. can someone tell me which colors should be hooked together to make this work properly? thanks!

wires coming from the car are:
1. black (ground)
2. blue w/ red stripe
3. blue w/ white stripe
4. red w/ blue stripe
5. red

wires coming from the stereo
1. black (ground)
2. yellow
3. red
4. blue (power ant.)

I just used trial and error. I looked to try and find some book that has the appriopriate color matches with ground antenna power etc., but I couldn't find any. I'm assuming that you know what the colors of your new stereo mean. I have a 1994 escort. For mine, yellow from stereo to blue w/ red wire. Red from stereo to blue w/ black. It might be blue/white or blue/blue in yours. Check all of your fuses before you begin. Connect them, turn key in ignition, and push whatever button activates your stereo. If it works, then connect the wires more permanently. If not, then check the fuse and test the other color. If it doesn't work after this, you may have other problems.
Good luck.
