Hi,
I have a '97 Hyundai Elentra Sedan and while driving the rpm's will suddenly race for a few seconds and then get into gear. the Rpm's will be at 2 and then race up to 3-4 and then imediately get back into gear but its been doing this more frequently. Can anyone give me some suggestion? The transmission fluid is fine.
Thanks

do you have an auto or 5-speed?
you might have a bad torque converter. if its a manual, your clutch could be going.

Hi Tibby01,
Its an automatic! If it is a torque converter, what's typically the cost to replace?
Thanks for responding!

HyundaiFan:
It seems to happen when I'm driving about 20- 30 mph. I'm trying to accelerate, the gear is between 2-3 and it seems to slip. I'm worried that it may be the transmission. It already has a re-built one in it. This car has only 90,000 miles going on the third transmission. It doesn't make sense.
Thanks for your help.

Wow... yeah it seems like you have a more serious problem than I do. Well let me tell you, there were a few problems that Hyundai had with it's automatic transmissions for the 96-99 elantra models (both wagon and sedan). When my tranny began flaring between 3rd and overdrive I took my car to one of my mechanics. I couldn't take it to the dealer because I'm already the second owner and the car has a salvage title. My mechanic changed the 4th gear clutch and plates and after that didn't work he told me that the 4th gear might be losing hydraulic pressure. Well today I brought it back to him and he finally found the problem. It turns out its a stupid salenoid valve that wasn't working correctly. The best bet for you would be to go to the dealer and have it checked out. You might just be experiencing something else. Here is just an example from a website I found recently:
96 00 and01
Automatic transmission - if the transmission slips or will not go into
fourth gear, the end clutch probably needs to be replaced.
Automatic transmission may flare between second and third gears or downshift
poorly. There is a modified transmission control module available.
