Thanks Jeep.

So here's the latest fellas. Since you can copy channels from one file to another I brought my Bus channels over one at a time. It was important to cut overlap areas out which you can do by ctrl+click on a channel and then select the other channel and delete. I did this for both greys, both blues, and the black that made up the Bus.

see?

Here's a closer look.

Now I may go and fill the thin stripe back through the window on the bus and there's some little things but for the most part it's in and time for the Bug.

Very nice so far! The chrome on the bus and the reflections on the Ghia are great. I should have noticed this earlier, but isn't the front tyre of the Ghia a bit shiny?

it may be a tad...when I'm near the end I'll check it out. I'm counting on 7-10% dot gain which is normal on shirts. Basically when the ink goes through the hole it spreads slightly larger than the hole. I try to compensate for that but in this case I may add some dark grey.

Oh yeah this design is 8 colors only.

Lt. Blue, Dark Blue, Lt. Grey, Dark Grey, Chrome Yellow, Burnt Orange, and Black.

The Bug is going to be grey and the notchback will be Orange.

More tonight.

Looks cool! What color is that beetle going to be?

The Bug will be made mostly of the light grey and the dark grey. It's position in the design is the upper right under the end of the text and the mountain picture. Since I am limited to only 8 colors I had to think it through. I figure grey is a common enough old VW color and around the blue it should pop pretty well. Ineed to keep the stripes on the left grey and the car would get lost against that side. The stripes are representative of the EMPI (vw parts company) stripes and they hold a special meaning for VW folk.

That's part of the challenge with shirt work. You can use more costly methods to get unlimited colors but most clients don't have unlimitied budgets.

Here's the latest on the Bug.

Almost done.

I'll go back in and polish in a bit. There's some areas I'm if-y on but It's better to determine that after the render is complete.

Oh on a side note I just got another job that will be shirts with a 87 Grand National, a 89 Firebird, and a 68 Camaro in cartoon style. I'll be drawing the cars by hand then render the color separations in Photoshop. Should be fun.

Sweet...a 87 Firebird, a 1968 Camaro, I'll be keeping an eye out for that one.

Here's the Bug. There's a couple tiny spots, but it's ready at this point to be integrated.

so I started on the final car which was the first one I did in Illustrator.

It's called a Notchback. I dropped the unfinished version in the design just to get a feel for it. It's color is 100% of the shadow color in the Ghia with red blended in. Once again there are only 8 individual colors in this design.

Here's the Notch a little closer.

almost done!

I like how you did your chrome. It's cool to see how you progressed from the beggining to now.

Well it's over. I had to put it down. The next job is already started.

My thoughts?

Well...I started stronger than I finished which is never desired. The first car drawn in Illustrator was the Notchback (Orange car), and it was the last rendered in channels. After rendering 4 vehicles I had a much better grasp on what I was doing but by then it wasn't practical to go back. A stronger composition wouldn't hurt either. I learned an awful lot though, and I'm ok with it for the most part. Next one will be better.

Cut me some slack jack....it was a learning process. I'm starting on my next design tonight. I have less than 2 weeks to deliver so now I get to put all that I've learned to the test.

I'm only gonna post 3 pics of it here. Sketches, lineart, and final. I figure after this you all understand the procedure.

lolol

Yeah, it dragged on for centuries, we better understand...

right.......in any case it's not quite over.

One of the coolest parts of the rendering in channels is that I can....that's right you guessed it. Change colors and effect the design without having to redo separations.

So I changed the Orange to something more print friendly and a color I know will mix well on the press. (A new friend from another board really helped me with this).

It adds great variation to the Notchback (Orange car), and still lets the Karmen flow.

http://www.58vw.com/af/arcdest1.jpg

In the second variation I changed to a hot pink Notch. Notice how it affects the shadow in the Karmen Ghia.

http://www.58vw.com/af/arcdest2.jpg

Once again each color will go on a different screen. This is agreat example of how a slight change can effect the entire design. Here's the light grey separation.

http://www.58vw.com/af/arcdesclr35.jpg

On the whole "time" tip let me explain. I was not really pressed for time on this, and I wanted to really learn how this is done. I know I'm getting paid good $$ so the time I spend now will enable me to fly on the next one, and I won't make major mistakes, or be trying to draw by the seat of my pants. The patience I have demonstrated now will help me in the long run. I work as a flash developer full-time and this is just side work. I'm hoping to retire from real world work and draw cars as an old man.

Next time you buy a race shirt or a car show shirt look at it, and this may make more sense. Matter of fact look at any shirt and wonder how. You may actually benefit by not having to go through the long way because this was in place. I didn't have it laid out for me, so I laid it out for you. Save it someplace becuase if you stick with this car art thing this may benefit you greatly in the future...trust me.
