I have a problem with 92 lumina euro 3.1 4 door. I'll start up my car and go down the road after about 5 minutes or so the car will jerk and the rpm gauge will shoot up and down. It happens when i slow my car down. It died on me at a parking lot. There are lights and car just won't turn on. I had it towed to a mechanic and had to pay $650 for an ignition module, tow, and labor off course($250 part rip off i know). They did the usual tests under the machine and found nothing wrong. So they kept it for a few days and let it run. It ran good for them in park. Finally stalled and they replaced the ignition module and injectors.

Thinking it was fixed i drive it home and it does the same thing again in my driveway(actually jerked on highway on way home). They started it and left it and never test drove it. I'm sure this is a common problem but i couldn't get a good answer searching through pages of posts. Please name some possibilities as to whats wrong.

I just got this car from a guy in the newspaper. it ran good when i test drove it and all. i know i got shafted. :banghead:

check your mass air flow senso (MAF), oxygen sensor and you might even have a plugged cat in your exhaust sytem. not sure how to help.

check to see if you're getting spark, if not, it's a crank sensor

After it dies does it crank but not fire or does it not even crank?

This car doesn't use a MAF (mass airflow sensor) . Checking for spark would be good. I can tell you that the going price for that ignition module is $200 to $250...yes, i agree, its outrageous! If you got the new module, AND INJECTORS, plus labor and the tow for $650, you got a deal. Injectors are about $80 apiece. Too bad it didn't fix it. The mechanics didn't do a complete job of diagnosing your car. You have 4 main possibilities:The crank sensor, the wire harness that runs from the crank sensor to the ignition module, the injectors (unless they WERE replaced), or the engine computer (ECM). The crank sensor is located on the back side of the eng. block and the ign. module is on the front side of the eng. block. The harness that runs between the two will rub on the oil pan and short out, giving you an intermittent dieout situation. This is the first place to look. The wire colors are Yellow and Black. and they will be a twisted pair. Normally they are covered with a black jacket, but oil usually deteriorates this and the wires get out and rub. Check it out !
