cruise control quit working

Ok, I think my Aurora is dying. I've owned it for 2 years and had almost no problems with it. Within the last month, my struts are shot, I have a strut mout out now, my radiator got a crack in it (I already fixed that), my engine is grinding (I have another post about that), my brakes are going out (just the pads are low), my rear passenger window quit working, my air conditioning quit working (it worked great about a week ago), and now my cruise control just went out on the way home a few minutes ago. I probably should just drive it to the junk yard but I love this car when it drives nice.
I know that troubleshooting my cruise control really in depth probably isn't a good idea for the average joe like me, but before I pay some high price tech to look at it, are there any things I could check first? Maybe a certain fuse or something that is really simple?

Any suggestions on how to fix my cruise control? I know this should be the least of my worries, but I use my cruise all the time. If I don't have it on, I have this tendancy to keep on letting off the gas until I notice I am going like 40 in a 70 MPH zone.

And just to clarify, my cruise doesn't work at all anymore. It does not come on for even a split second after hitting the cruise button. I've tried hitting the set button at the end of the blinker and the resume button and neither will get it to turn on even for a second.

Does anyone know what I/P means when refering to troubleshooting the cruise control? The GM manual refers to it constantly but never says what it means.

I would have the brakes fixed first then worry about the cruise control.

Well, I am going to fix my brakes. I just need new pads. It's only $30 or so for new pads for the front and back. I'm probably going to do that in the next few weeks. I just need some suggestions on how to fix the cruise control. I've learned a little about it since I first posted. I have been studying my gm repair manual and it has a couple sections on troubleshooting the cruise control. I am going to do that tomorrow. But does anyone know what I/P means? It refers to it a few times in the manual but never says what it is. (And it isn't Internet Protocol. I'm a computer tech and that is what I first thought but that makes no sense for a car. Who knows though, maybe my car is wired for high-speed internet. LOL!)

The reason I mentioned your brakes is because they and your cruise control are both affected by the brake peddle.

I figured that if it was the brake pedal switch, the brake lights would be on constantly because it is probably the same switch that does both. Am I correct on that or is it possible that the brake lights wouldn't be on constantly yet still have the switch out so that the cruise wouldn't work.

They are seperate switches.

my cruise control went out last year. I had some other problems having to do with my starter at the same time...well, to make a long story short, I had to replace the intake manifold. There is some kind of pressure relief valve on the passenger side of the intake manifold (the air comes in on the drivers side). I noticed a piece of rubber seal hanging out of the valve (there is a spring loaded "door" with a rubber seal around it). Apparently that was not sealing and the vacuum was all screwed up. I was told that the cruise runs on vacuum. The long story is that the part costs $10.00 and its relatively easy to replace. But GM doesn't make it anymore. They want you to buy the entire intake manifold (I don't know if the valve is built into the new part or not). It costs $300.00. I found a used manifold on the web (car-part.com) for $50.00 with the valve attached and replaced the valve. It simply screws into the end of the intake manifold. I did not plan on repairing the cruise control and I don't know if that was the final fix for the cruise or not, but you might want to check. Could be a computer problem too, but lets hope not.

Ok, the wierd problem was my air conditioning compressor went out about the same time. It went out so the pulley wouldn't even turn, it broke my belt, so I had to get it replaced. (Cost me $700.) But I figured my A/C and my cruise would have nothing in common. But I got my A/C fixed and, for some reason, my cruise works now. Maybe the extra resistance the A/C was putting on the belt and the engine was causing the cruise not to work. Or maybe it's a fluke it works now and it will go back out in a few days. I don't know. I'll have to wait and see.

I/P usually means the Instrument Panel.
