Jetta CD changer

The '03 Jetta I purchased this week does not have a CD changer. But there is a compartment in the trunk were one would go. The VW dealer offered to install a changer for almost $500. Will an aftermarket changer work with the stock audio system or do I have to go with the VW changer? If I can use an after market changer I would appreciate suggestions on one at a reasonable price. the good thing with the original cd vw changer it connects rigth into the plug in the trunk but you don't have to use a vw changer go to cruchfield and you can find a replacement cd changer and addapter to connected the same using the plug in the trunk good luck.....
