After having a '96,'99, '01, and a '05 Chevrolet truck and a '93, '95, '97 and a '04 Ford F150 I can say that I think Ford makes the better truck. We still have the '01 Silverado and it has been the best Chevrolet that we have ever had, with 25,000 miles on it we will keep it as as second vehicle. The worst Chevrolet that we have ever had is the '05, nothing but trouble, that is the one that we will trade on a new F150. The best truck by far that we have had is the '04 F150. So I would say no, we would not buy another Silverado, at least for some time.

The question was, would you buy it again? The person answered the question and explained why and you did not like the reply. I own both a Ford truck and a Chevy truck. They are both very good trucks and I would not run down either of them but if I could only keep one I would keep the Ford.
Ford has been the number one selling truck in America for 28 years and has been the number one selling vehicle in America for 23 years now. They must be doing something right.

It would be a pretty boring forum if everyone just posted how great their Chevy trucks were. They are pretty much all the same except for a few that are more heavilly modified than others, so we know what they are.
This is a discussion forum, and honest feedback from different owners should be appreciated especially when they are answering questions posted by other members.
If these trucks were totally free of their quirks and troubles, I probably would never have looked up the forum as I have better things to do than sit around and tell everyone about the nice green Mid-Michigan 6.0 2500HD. There are thousands of other trucks just like it, so I'm afraid nobody would have much interest. Don't get me wrong, I think my truck is cool and I'm basically pretty happy with it.
Anyway, we've gotten away from the subject...sorry. Would I buy it again? If I buy used again, definitely. I came from a GM truck dealership, and in case major repairs are needed, I still get employee prices there because I spent over 12 years in the service department. I couldn't afford to drive anything but a GM. I couldn't imagine paying full rate at a dealer for repairs! If I happen to buy new next time (which I highly doubt) I would shop around and take the best appearing package, as I wouldn't worry about any kind of vehicle with a full warranty. :2cents:

Not if you look at GM's total truck sales between GMC and Chevy (other than cosmetics, they're the same truck). GMC and Chevy combined sell about the same as Ford. I never really have figured out why GM splits its trucks between 2 brands like that, but, whatever works for them.
They must be doing something right.
This gets into another theory of mine, but I think I've offended enough people in this thread. Sorry if I offended anyone

Don't forget that Lincoln also uses the F150 platform now...just like Chevy and GMC.
No offense taken here, Blender. Probably shouldn't have laid out the lecture anyway. I was pretty cranky yesterday. Work related.

No, now that's different, too. The Lincoln is more than cosmetically (I SERIOUSLY hope) different than the F-150. The only difference in the Chevy and GMC, other than badging, is the front grille/headlight/bumper area. Just cosmetics. Lincoln doesn't make a work truck model like Chevy/GMC and Ford do. If you want to bring Lincoln on board, then you have to factor in the Cadillacs

Well, I was thinking about this post when I was cruising the town last night. I sure do like the handling of my 01 silverado LS. But that may be because I am coming from a 1977 F150 :) And anything would have been an upgrade.
I checked with my Brother who has been turning wrenches since he was 15 (carpel tunnel syndrome by age 35) ASE certified for 20+ years. I asked hime BEFORE I bought my truck what trucks he sees as having more problems, etc.
Here were a few pointers he gave me:
FORD: Crap. Vaccum assisted 4 wheel drive?? Many plastic parts in the drivetrain/transfer case/transmission that cause enormous expense when they go out (2wd and 4wd). Interior design is cheap, electrical system issues. Advice: STAY AWAY :nono:
DODGE: Great Cummins Diesel engines, Trucks will fall apart all around the engine. Good drivetrain, electrical systems. Less than average MPG. Repais costs very high due to internal electronics inside the engine. Be careful of Diesel Fuel Prices (currently $3.49 Gallon 10/01/2005). Advice, unless you get the diesel versions, STAY AWAY :nono:
CHEVROLET: Good engine design, esepecially the 5.3. Get an HD version if you can. Easy replacement of common parts (coils, ignition parts etc) and expense is lower than average. Most common problems: Fuel pump regulator, Fuel Pump, Ignition Coils. Advice: GET ONE!!
TOYOTA/NISSAN: Outrageous repair expense. Cost of parts is phenomonal. Sure engines run great for many miles, but drivetrain, braking, and electrical systems (sensors) have relatively high replacement prices due to the labor involved. Advice: If you can afford it, want to support Foreign Manufacturers, and want to be forced to use dealer parts, GET ONE :sly:
Conclusion: Chevrolet (on average) is still the choice for me. Lower repair costs, relative ease of repair, Good drivetrains, engines. My choice after much homework went to Chevrolet. And I am a recent convert From FORD. My brother is a Die Hard Mopar Fan, and he reccomends chevrolet.
All vehicles have problems because they are Man-Made. We are many years away from defect free vehicles, and besides......IF manufacturers develope a Lifelong, perfect vehicle..The Parts industry would go under.. Ie NO more Maytag Repairman. :dunno:

Now you're talking. I agree with it all. Perhaps about the only car manufacturer that does't have a few lemons of problems squeeze thru is Rolls Royce. This puppies are hand made and if one malfunctions, the company sends their own factory team in to fiix it.
When you buy one of these things, a certain amount of sober thinking is needed. When I bouight my '02, I was mostly contemplating a Dodge. I have a lot of family that buys mopar, but I just thought it was not my style and I didn't like the way they held up. I ended up with exacly what I wanted at the time and am still happy with it three years later. If you want a Ford..go buy one, but what you'll have after you get it is just that...a Ford!!! Chevy's aren't perfect, just repairable and as we used to say when I was younger, Old Chevy's never die, they just go faster!!!

I couldnt agree more, Ive been around alot of people that all have their opinions about vehicals. My family was alway GM as long as i can remember being in a car. 2 of my dads trucks were excellent, he had a early to mid 80's with a straight 6, he sold it and we saw the truck running around for many years after that, his last truck a 92 C/K 2500HD, That truck was unbelievable, not only did he get a great deal, he barely had to put a dime in to that truck, sold it with almost 200k and it ran like the day he bought it. I looked around a little before I bought my first truck. I guess i just wasnt impressed with what i saw. Dodge was a little more than i wanted to spend and i didnt like the way the fords looked. My roomate now has an 04 Titan and that thing has been to the shop more than my truck has, yeah they are roomy, and supposedly they are pretty powerful but i would put my silverado with 80k against that truck anyday. I dont like bashing that much but what was said is true, they are all man made and bound to have defects, but chevys have always been in my book the easiest to fix and customize with cost effectiveness in mind. I love this forum and I love my silverado. Im a sponge soaking up all the good info. Keep it coming. Long live Chevys!!

I recently purchased my 2000 extended cab, 8ft bed, 2500 after much agonizing. I've NEVER bought a domestic vehicle before but Toyota and Nissan both dropped the ball IMO. They don't offer anything like my Chevy. Nissan doesn't even offer an 8ft bed and Toyota only offers it with a regular cab. I don't think either of them offer an "auto 4wd" setup and I know they don't offer anything resembling a heavy duty truck.
Why Chevy over Ford or Dodge?
From what I've seen, heard, and read Dodges are crap(glass tranny, front end) , Fords are good workhorses but are rough around the edges(pre 2004) and I don't particularly like the styling. I've also seen some stupid electrical problems.
Most people I know with a Chevy/Gmc love it and would buy another one. Would I? Time will tell.

Now if only chevy could get motivated to fix some of their issues...ie piston slap, clunky transmissions, jerky cruise controls, etc. Shouldn't be hard to come up with a fix, after all it's just mechanical components. Seems like they need a big shake up at the upper management end.
They do make good looking trucks, but for me it's a 50-50 split if I were to buy another one. Guess it depends on what is out there at the time.

I bought my 01 Z71 last spring with 57000 miles on it (Private sale $15,500). I buy used and the deal usually determines what make it is. My previous truck was a 93 Ford which was falling apart despite being mecanically sound and taken care of.
I was leaning twoards a 02+ Dodge, couldn`t afford one. I drove Fords pre 04. I found my Chevy to be the nicest of all. Auto 4x4 cat`s a**.
I`m not crazy about the CSK, steering shaft wich I had to replace but I would buy it again.
Any one ever try to change spark plugs on a Ford modular engine? OHC with 10 feet of timing chain. I`ll take the Chevrolet. Fords are great trucks, but I think the new 150 is ugly with the high flat box sides. The Silverado is close to perfect but GM needs to put stronger intermedate steering shafts in them and fix the CSK (that Ive read they done).
The quality of parts needs improvement.
I had a 1988 chevy 188,000 miles on it. Still ran strong when I sold it. Rust was killing my 93 Ford faster than I could fix it. Oil pan, spring shackles these things should last the life of the vehicle.

'99 Sierra 1500 (yes new body): 102K miles
Tows a 24' boat up AZ mountains in the AZ summer frequently.
"Major" repair list:
-replace defective factory stereo @ 60k
-replace water pump @ 85k
Runs, drives, shifts, like new. Not babied while driving but babied when in my garage, ie driven hard and self maintained.
I'd buy two at a time if I could afford it!

Next one is a 2007. 3/4 ton, 4x4, crew cab, longest bed I can get. I have been the Ford and Dodge route through work and friends...not going there with my money.
The only thing I would like to see Chevrrolet answer is that extra size crew cab thing that Dodge is doing.

I am on my second Chevy Truck. The first one I owned was a 93 Silverado 4x4. It had 140k miles on it when I traded it in for my 2000 Silverado (new)which now also has 140K miles on it.. There has not been any major repairs needed.. but there are a lot of little things, like the driver door switch does not work (suppose to turn the dome light on and shut the radio off), The low coolent light keeps comming on, even though the coolent is full, the gas gauge goes nuts and the tailgate does not lock.. I have to remove the plate and push the rods to each side then replace the plate. But other than that, the engine is strong. My 93 was in great running condition.. I know I could have gotton well over 200K, just like I know I will get that much on this one.
Chevy all the way for me!!!!
Someone made mention about the front end of the 03 + chevy trucks being ugly.. I have to agree. I will hold on to mine until they redo the front end. I have noticed that chevy will redesign there trucks between 4-5 years. so hopefully the 07 will look better.

I have to agree that the '03 and up Silverado is ugly, not as bad as the Dodge but it is ugly. We normally trade every other year but when the '03 came out we decided to keep our '01. It now has 33,000 miles on it and we will trade this fall. I have already seen pictures of the '07 and it is not bad at all. We will try to deal on a '07 Silverado since we have $3,000.00 in GM credits to use but if we can't deal then we will buy a new Ford. If Ford would take our GM credits we would order a Ford today!

I would never buy another GM product. I bought a 2004 2500HD LT in August of '04. I have had nothing but problems. I posted a thread "multiple problems with 2500HD.." yesterday. I don't understand what the deal is. Are the trucks built to last or built to last 20,000 miles. Service is terrible. 4 hours for an oil change and this is "by appointment" and even after waiting I finally left without the oil change. Minor issues take all day, they offer no loaner & I use my truck to meet with clients and perform check-ups at job sites, so I cant sit and browse through mags all day. Funny, they don't offer a loaner or want to reimburse me for my time lost!!!

Wow! I am not commenting on GM quality as I question it myself, but you obviously need to find another dealer. Their poor service has nothing to do with GM quality, they just suck.:2cents:

I am sure you have heard of lemon's before. Every car maker has them.. even Ferrari. But it doesn't mean that they make bad vehicles. Most of my vehicle have been chevy and I would say that overall they have been very good to me. My truck now has over 140K and doesn't skip a beat. I take it on long trips all the time.
As far as the dealerships go. I would tend to agree with you regarding the overall service quality of GM. they are slow and unreliable. Now, there are those exceptions. There has only been one dealership that was any good. The rest are all about giving out bad diagnostics for more money. One of them tried to charge me for a fuel pump when infact it was the fuel regulator. Saved myself $800. I would like to thank this forum for that too. :)

I have owned 2 GM products over the years, and I can honestly say that I would rather walk than buy another GM product.

I take it you still own a GM product? What was wrong with the two you bought? They could not have been that bad since you bought two of them.

Funny, they don't offer a loaner or want to reimburse me for my time lost!!!
i have had the same problems with the dealers in my area. only one time did i take the truck in and thay fixed it in no time at all. that was for the stearing clunk.
I had to fix the back fireing on my own. there computer did not pick it up. heck i had to basicly trap the mech and take him for a ride in the truck to show him i did have a back firing problems. his only reply was well when the check engen light comes on bring it back. then thay would beable to find it.
after the con job i got from the sales man. Yes i will never buy a brand new chevy truck.
thay have lost 5 sales a year from me alone. yes i do drive a brand new toyota truck to the dealer that sales man worked for every summer and show it off. thay are still pissed. I have had the head of that dealer call me and try to sweet talk me in to buying from them. I just remind him that he could of been sell to two companys insted now I only work for one and buy less trucks.

I've had several trucks, and currently have two; but none irritate me like the 04 and 06 GM trucks I now have. I bought them due to the tremendous incentives and GM discounts I get. But I hate (in this order):
Daytime running lights (pull the bulbs),
Automatic headlights (jump the photoresistor on the dash),
Automatic door locks (pester GM for an update to the 06 body control module so the locks can be programmed to do NOTHING again),
Awful sound system (delete the bose woofer and add a powered 10" sub),
Unresponsive throttle, Torque management, and abuse-mode management (these are next, considering a jessebub tune).
I'll try the Silverado again in a few years when I go to buy another truck, but I'm sure my next truck will be another F350 like the 04 I just got out of. I miss my 04 F350 so bad. The Ford truck rattled and made wierd noises but it simply did what I wanted and no more, no less. It was a perfect work truck and heavy duty hauler. Plus it sat up high like a truck should.

I have 1998 Silverado Z71 5.7. 90k. Not many problems. The intake leak, fixed it my self. Dome light won't go off. That's about it. The new ones are a little too pricey and I plan to drive mine until the wheels fall off.

I purchased an 01 silverado 2wd 5.3 with 26k back in 02. now 67k. The truck has run perfect. The piston slap when cold and tailgate issue. I also had one of the speakers go out, replaced under warrenty. I then did my homework and covered the speakers from rain water. Other than that I tear the back tires off with the power the chevy makes. Everyone that gets in my truck loves it, dosn't ride like a truck, comfertable interior, and just all around good looking . Plus gas mileage is a lot better compared ford gets, No comparison! When looking at hp and gas mileage, how can you turn down a chevy ! I test drove a lot of fords and chevys. Chevys just seemed built better. I will always stick with chevy, unless you will show me a cheap cheap ford I can't refuse.

I buy Chevy because I get the GM employee discount. My only rule is that I won't own or drive no ugly truck.
I have checked numerous automotive threads and this is what I have found:
1. There is a preponderance of people who hate their Ford, Chevy, Chrysler, Toyota, etc.
2. There is a preponderance of people who love their Ford, Chevy, Chrysler, Toyota, etc.
3. There is no way anyone will change the peoples mind who hate their Ford, Chevy, Chrysler, Toyota, etc.
4. There is no way anyone will change the peoples mind who love their Ford, Chevy, Chrysler, Toyota, etc.

i'm undecided. i have a 2000 ext cab 4x4, with 127000 miles on it. my tranny is crapping out and 1.5 years ago i had to get a new fuel pump $600 for parts. and the dealership took a week to fix. two of my back seat belts won't come out of the retractors. front speakers are falling out of their holes. fuel gauge reads wrong. coolant light comes on when its full. tailgate cables broke before recall and they wouldn't replace them till 1 year later. i know all vehicles will have problems but i dont know what i'll buy next. i think i will go with a pre 87 chevy so i can do the work myself and not have to worry about the computer. i could put a new crate engine in one of those for cheaper than this trannys gonna cost me.:screwy:

2004 Silverado first GMC product owned. 34 years of vehicles ownership and I have never had nearly as many problems with ANY prior vehicle compared to the Chevy.
And, the dealerships I have been to consistently play the "move the sucker along" game.
"We can't replicate the problem." "Everything is fine."
Oh, okay. Sure. Uh huh. I may not be an SAE mechanic but I owned and operated semi-trucks for years, worked construction where I maintained and repaired equioment of all types. I KNOW when a mechanical contraption has a problem and I KNOW when someone is pulling the wool over my eyes.
So..... no more GMC for me. Never ever. And, I inform everyone I know of the treatment received by Chevy dealers.
Well, live and learn. It's just a shame that GMC coporate higher-ups earn more in one year than the vast majority of us commoners earn in a lifetime of work. If GMC folds the wealth held by the biqwigs ensures they will lead lavish lifestyle...... on the money they suckered out of me and others.

For the love of God, will a moderator please lock this thread? This has gotten almost as bad as that stupid gas mileage poll.

Say no more, I agree, this should have been done awhile ago. That's the problem with polls that have no expiration date, they keep getting resurrected tome and time again. Please, in the future if you start a poll keep it open no longer than 90 days. Thank you.
