I had almost that identical bike, but I haven't a clue why your idle is falling like that. That bike should NOT idle at 1500rpms anyway, it should be (according to either Clymer or Haynes --don't remember which book I had) around 8-900. Check spark plugs for gap, spark. check fuel (it might be bad gas or just plain old). Check air "intake" to make sure there is no restriction. Check exhaust for any restrictions. That's about all I've got.
PS. Sorry to hear about your accident.

You might check for either dirt or a foreign particle in the carbs
Blocking the idle circuits.
Also, 1500 rpm is way too high to idle at.

800 (like cars)-1000 (many sportbikes) rpm. people who are involved with track days/racing, their preference level may vary more than 1000.

IIRC, the GS500E had a pretty low idle, but I could be wrong. It's only a twin, so as I remember, it had a lower idle. Again, my memory could be warped... it's been 3 years since I had the bike. Maybe 1000 is more like it. I'm so confuzzled... stupid work.
