Never seen a spider look like this before, bitch looks scary. Look at the second picture, look how big the fangs are (kind of hard b/c it's blurry). Those fangs look vicious. This was on the inside frame of my door (behind the glass), I was walkin by and I saw it. I took some pics, and decided to chase it away incase it got in the house. So there really was no way I could get in the inside of that frame b/c it is a very small space. So I used my jet-flame lighter (it's like a lil flame thrower):

http://s01.imagehost.org/0252/DSC00454.JPG

http://s01.imagehost.org/0252/DSC00455.JPG

So I lit it, and got it between the frame. It burned the spider a lil bit, it fell to the ground and just stood still. Wasn't sure if it was dead or not, and looked around for something to smash it. Couldn't find anything, so I tried to burn it again. The bitch can actually hop!! It hopped like half an inch above the ground and almost got right on my hand! The thing was lightning fast, ran for about a foot (took it like a millisecond) and it just stayed still again. Not wanting to take my chances of burnin it again and gettin bit with venom, I just hosed it out of my walk-way. So that spider is probably back near my door again, waiting...

So does anyone know what kind of a spider this is? Never ever seen this spider before, and looks nothing like the ones I've seen before.

lol b/c that thing was lightning fast, if I missed. It could crawl right up my leg, and bite the shit out of me. Yea that thing is huge, and taken at actual size. So imagine that pic on your computer screen right now.

Thats just a big old wolf spider. Probably a Carolina Wolf Spider looking for a place to stay sheltered now that it's getting cooler. They look scary, but they are harmless- unless you're a cricket...

that place isn't goin to find my house as shelter! Do they bite humans at all? They got a nice big set of fangs there.

EDIT: Did some research, they are not wolf spiders.

they look totally different than what is up above

Yeah- not a Carolina Wolf. It's definitely a wolf spider species of some sort, though- they do that "leg thing" where it looks like 4 large ones instead of 8. They like to squeeze into cozy areas when the weather starts changing, too. See if you can find pics of other WS species in your area...I'll look through some of my Entymology books. They may bite if you fuck with them enough, but not that painful or poisonous. You have way more dangerous spiders than this guy in Virginia.

you got it blindside! thanks for the find

" In escaping predators they may very well jump a distance of five or six inches"

HOLY SHIT! that could have easily jumped on my hand, I would have been scared shitless. I just showed my cousins (they got a serious case of arachnaphobia) They were scared shitless from just the picture itself :evillol: :iceslolan . They closed it right away and now searchin their rooms for any spiders

Did you? They proved that the spider in the first post was a nursery web spider, but i dont see any referance to the pic I posted. I sent one of those spiders to the entomology(sp) department at the UofA and they told me it was a nebraska wolf spider.
http://entomology.unl.edu/images/spiders/lycosa_rabida.jpg
Nebraska Wolf spider:
Nebraska Wolf spiders are the largest spiders found in Nebraska. Their bodies are covered with short hairs in shades of brown, black, gray, white, yellow, or green. They do not make webs or web snares, but instead hunt for prey. Some of these spiders shelter under leaves or debris while others construct retreats in shallow tunnels or dig deep burrows.

Egg sacs of most wolf spiders are shaped like a ball (globular) and are carried by the female attached to her spinnerets. When the spiderlings (baby spiders) hatch, they climb onto their mother's back and ride there for several days before leaving.

Nebraska Wolf spiders often alarm homeowners because they are large and move very quickly. We see most of these spiders in the fall when concerned homeowners find them in their garages or in and around the house. Wolf spiders are not "house spiders" and will likely die in the home. They are considered accidental invaders. These beneficial spiders can be removed and placed back outdoors where they belong.

As with any spider, do not pick them up with your bare hands. Place a cup over the spider, then gently slide a piece of paper or cardboard under the cup. You can then carry the cup with the spider outdoors and release it away from the home.

I'm not in Nebraska though... In Northern Virginia. Plus that spider near my house looks exactly like a nursery web spider

Alright you weekend entomologists, identify this spider I found this afternoon while stacking firewood in the garage.

Key features include red legs and cephalothorax, bluish abdomen and 4 yellow spots of the back (the anterior pair is larger). The thing is still in my garage, I can get it if anyone wants more info.

My brother has taken it to the university biology department. I will get some more pictures when/if he brings it back.

09-16-2004, 04:19 PM
how big was it?

Sean
09-16-2004, 04:25 PM
I am guessing that the body was 1cm long, and with the legs spread out it had a diameter of 3 or 4 cm.

DiabloGT
09-16-2004, 04:38 PM
its not THAT big...

Sean
09-16-2004, 08:11 PM
Yes, but it is colourful. It doesn't need to camoflauge itself, because nothing will eat it. Brightly coloured bugs = poisionous.
