Bad ignition starter switch?

I have a '95 Camaro with the L32 (3.4 L V6) and it's an automatic. A few days ago the spedometer and tachometer started acting strange... like when I was on the freeway doing about 70 mph, the spedometer would bounce around from 80 to 60 (while still going 70) until I either accelerated or hit the brake. The tachometer would do the same, though not as drastically... just bounce from like 2,000 rpm to about 3,000. I never felt any hesitation or heard any drop or rise in the engine revs, and once I got off the freeway it didn't do it anymore.
Well the next day, I had trouble starting the car. It would turn over and catch, but as soon as I let go of the key and it went back into the "on" position, the car would die. I tried it a few times, then went in and told my step dad. My mom asked if my remote starter would work. I hadn't tried it yet, but I did after she asked, and it started just fine. So I put the key in the ignition and it worked. When I was going to head back home, the car wouldn't start again, and I hit the remote too many times and disengaged the programming so I couldn't remote start it. I played with the ignition a little and figured out that I had to pull the key toward me in the on position, just before it got to the off position (not the lock position). None of the warning lights or gauges were on when it would die, but when I moved the toward me they would come on. So after a few attempts, the engine nearly stalled but sputtered back to life and ran fine... up until last night.
The spedometer thing happened again, only more drastically and more often. I got off the freeway and it kept doing it. I was about ten minutes from my house and it just died on me. It would start up with the remote (I reprogrammed it), but as soon as I would push the brake in to shift out of park (there is a security relay that disengages the remote start when the brake pedal is pushed), the engine would die. I tried moving it around like I did before and got nothing. I ended up having to call my step dad and he tied my Camaro up to the back of his truck and he towed me home.
I looked through here last night and found a couple of similar cases and figured it was my ignition switch. I tried looking through my Haynes manual before going to sleep, but gave up because I was tired. I had to get my mom to take me to work this morning, making her a little late. And she has a doctor appointment tomarrow, so I want to get it fixed tonight but my step dad said it would probably take two after-work days to finish.
I know this is a long post, but I wanted to explain the symptoms in as much detail as possible. I haven't checked the fuses yet, and my a/c and fuel pump still kick in when the key is in the on position, just not anything in the dash. Could a blown fuse be the problem or is it the ignition switch? Or something entirely different?

sounds like it could be a bad ignition lock cylender, could be a wiring harness rubthrough, but i would tend to lean towards the aftermarket wiring system as being the culprit here. but if you can play with the key in the cylender and make it work intermittantly then i would suggest replacing that component and going from there.

Well, so far we have pretty much torn apart the steering column. We unhooked the remote starter, took out the ignition lock cylinder, and unhooked all of the accessory wiring to the steering column to see if there was a short. We reconnected the battery, tried to start it (using a pair of pliers to turn something we have yet to figure out what it is) and had similar results as before. Now, instead of having to pull it toward the off position to keep the engine running, it has to be held almost in the starting position (pretty much where I was losing power before it completely went out on me). We can't seem to figure out a way to get back to the ignition starter switch though... it's tucked away almost to the firewall and the steering column is as low as it can get.

it might be a bad ignition switch, this should be right behind the ignition lock cylender, not anywhere near the firewall. the lock cylender should have a flat peice of metal sticking off the end of it, that fits into the ignition switch, and turns it when you turn the key. if the switch is bad, it should be there behind the lock cylender.

After comparing my problems with some other ones on here, I thought it might be the ignition switch. But aparently there is a thing called the ignition starter switch that is totally different and people get the two confused. It's mounted on top of the steering column, but toward the back... not quite at the firewall but nowhere near the front. When you turn the key into the different positions, it pushes this rod into the ignition starter switch, which has a few wiring harnesses plugged into it. I went to Autozone, asked the guy, he got it for me, then told me good luck installing it. My step dad posted to another forum today and the guy that responded said that he had to do this once and ended up having to remove the whole steering column to replace it, so my step dad is a little pissed about that. I'll be home in about an hour and a half to help him, but we'll see how far we get.

Okay. It turns out that the ignition starter switch is the same thing as the ignition switch, so I have no idea what the little turning thing is (just like two posts ago). We managed to replace the ignition switch and that turned out to be what the problem was. My step dad did most of the work and didn't take any pictures, but I give LOTS of credit to this guy Rob for having an awesomely detailed site about his Camaro(s?). He had a similar problem and ended up removing the whole steering column to fix his instead of disassembling everything. I think we may have been able to figure it out on our own, but it definately wouldn't have happened nearly as quickly. Besides, my step dad was having his doubts about it being the ignition switch and after reading Rob's problem, I think he was a little less doubtful. But thanks for your attempted help... you were the only one that tried and if I weren't hard-headed and you would have hit me with those ideas a day earlier, I would have probably agreed with you. Good luck to who ever decides to try this on their own... it is definately cheaper that way. A measley $20 for the part as opposed to probably $200 or $300 for the labor, maybe even more. Now I just have to figure out how to reprogram my alarm...
