Hi, the difference is that the GT stands for Gran turismo and the I is for inyection, technically the gtīs should be carbs and the gti inyected but I guess that is not true any more. anyways, that is the difference between them

truth is that GTI doesn't really stand for anything
there are may different sources that states different meaning for GTI
sometimes, VW states it as Grand Tourisme Injection, but there are no real way to identify GTI

well, , there is an interesting museum about vw's (in wolfsburg), in the gti section there is a lot of info and ... :banghead: it explains that Gt comes from Gran Turismo, good old days when vw's where carbs. Then it came the injected system and they added the I . Now after 30 years (gti is celebrating the aniversary this year) the gti represents more than just .... injected.

Gt is basically an 8 valve gti with 4 doors. This was a model only produced for a little while. I'm assuming that you are talking of mid eighties North American models. Otherwise refer to the above or somewhere else, cause that's as far as my insight can take you.
Do note that there may have been some minor technical differences between gti's and gt's though I'm not sure. I owned a Gti and drove in a Gt and it seemed pretty similar to my car.

There are two-door gt's.
I believe that some of the gt's also had different rims than the gti's did.

I don't know in the us but here in europe the difference is depending on the kind of combustible that you use, gt is for diesel and gti is for gasoline.
Here in Europe the gasoline is a lot of expensier than in us so that is an attemp that you have to consider when u buy a car.
