No heat from vents only cold... help!!

I have a 2001 Grand cherokee... Not getting any heat from the vents only get the A/C. Been told by the dealer that they have to take the whole dash off to replace flaps... cost of $1,0000. plus.... anyone had any similar problem, and can we rectify it ourselves???? Help... winter is coming!!!

had same prblm on my geo. check under the dash where the wire connected to the hot and cold lever is and see if it is connected to the lever for the flaps. mine would slip off the lever when i changed it to cold and wouldn't open the flap when i moved it to hot. i had to put a stopper on the end of the lever to get it to stay on. mine was located on the driver's side next to the heater core.

A grand cherokee has electronic solenoids that operate the heater core valves. One of your solenoids are broke, or the knob is broke.
