low coolant light

I have a 1996 Lumina and my coolant low light came on because I need coolant and now it keeps comming on after I filled the tank any help to stop it from coming on would be helpful

It will continue to come on a few times (about 4 or 5 "cycles" of driving) after you fill it all back up. It'll go out in a few trips...or should.

If it continues to come on, pull it out and clean it. They get gooped up with sludge and won't read right. If the sludge looks like oil, you may have an intake starting to leak.

Just a thought but if you are having to keep adding coolant, maybe should fix the problem. It isn't normal to have to add coolant on a regular basis. Is there a leak and do u need a new thermostat??

the plastic overflow tank where you're putting the coolant in should have a 2 wire sensor plugged into it. Take the but end of a screwdriver and tap on the tank right where the sensor. The sensor has a float on it that is stuck down and this will jar the float free which should make the light go out.

although this is an old post I just want to let people know that on my car it seems the previous owner used some stop leak in there and it clogged up the sensor which was on the upper right side of my 92 lumina.

It just has a metal pin which comes off then the sensor is pulled out be careful because antifreeze will come out in the process.

then just remove the sensor and if it has anything clean it out I cleaned mine out with a toothpick.

then I reinstalled mine and filled it with antifreeze and No more light.
