49 Merc ... quick rod

Got a lil bored working on my contest entry, so I started another car. I started this Sunday, just something quick. I have a couple of these.. :grinno:

Pulled the body off, cut the suspension to the desired hight... low as it can go and still roll and have the wheels turn. Striped the body of all chrome. Striped the paint and filled all the holes with bondo. Started smoothing it all out when it was time to prepare for the pending storm.

So this is as far as I got. Will coutinue on it in a few days and post more pics.

Hey that's nice . . . who makes it?

It's the "Happy Days" 49 Mercury Stock by Ertl. It's a fairly nice car out the box. Kind of a semi gloss greenish gray color. All the little details are pretty good, chrome is nice. And damn well assebled. I don't know what glue they use but I pulled the chrome off the back of a bunch of the trim trying to get them off the body. Interior is simple, but good detail on the dash. I can't get the front seat off the floor pan :banghead: WHAT KINDA GLUE IS THIS????

It has a full engine and trans if you decide to go nuts on detail, plug wires are molded to the heads though. Should turn out nice when done :)

I so want that. Soak the seat/floorpan in some dot 3 brake fluid to help loosen it up. watch it though. Test the plast first to make sure it doesnt melt.

FLAT...

on the ground...I love it! Id say deep purple, as dark as you can find, with pink or light purply flames with a white outline. And lots of pinstriping!

Hehe, I think purple would be an excellent color. Royal purple and chrome make for some fabulous photos.

Hehe, I think purple would be an excellent color. Royal purple and chrome make for some fabulous photos.

Well the chrome part of that is out since I already striped it clean of chrome :iceslolan

I am planing a dark color, maybe black, with a flat or semi gloss finish. I will do either flames or scallops oir a tribal flame, not sure. I just need to find a flat or matt clear. Since I will be doing a couple of colors I need to get a uniform finish. After that, striping. Been a while since I've handled a pinstriping brush but we'll see how it goes :smokin:

Got a lil done while waiting out the storm, glad it missed here, sorry for the folks to the east of me, was ruff.

Got the big bondo sanded down and primed. It still needs some spotting and final sanding before paint. The doors don't align too well, I may try to tweek the hinge.

i have a question, how do you chop the top of a diecast 49 merc? what do you use to cut it? dremel?

cwmax
09-21-2004, 06:40 PM
I didn't chop the top on this Merc. I did on my 51 Pick-Up. I used a dremel w/ cutoff wheel, a hobby saw and a hack saw. Depending on where I was cutting. Some parts were so thick i used the hack saw, other places I used the deremel, then finished the cut with the hobby saw. Diecast is not easy to cut, takes some time, don't forget the goggles :-)

Tommycool666

ok but what i want to know is how do you chop it ,what do you do like step by step, do u have a link for a tutorial.

cwmax
09-21-2004, 08:05 PM
You can find how to do anything on a model, diecast or plastic if you look in the HOW-TO sections and reead the FAQs, here and in the Car Modeling forums.

Since I allready looked, here's a link to Mikes How to Chop Top.

http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?p=1877785#post1877785

It may be a diff car, but the procedure is the same.

would i be able to chop a diecast merc the same way i chopped my plastic one, heres what i did i followed it off this web site, check it out let me know if i can do a diecast the saem way http://www.cjhilton.com/models/chop.htm

mike@af
09-21-2004, 09:16 PM
Yes, Tommy, I believe that would work.

Just a thought, why dont you try thinking through things, engineer them, plan them out without asking, and see what model building/customization is all about?

Tommycool666
09-21-2004, 09:35 PM
cuz mike not everyone is so perfect and good like you are with the car modeling :)

FlySkyline
09-21-2004, 09:54 PM
You dont have to be perfect, you just have to try to figure things out, and keep working at it and you will start to get a hold of how things can be done. When I first started I was "Whats a dremel and where can I get one" and I am far from that now. Just look at what there is, then think about what you want to do and how you think it can be done, then go from there. When you finally figure out how to do something on your own, its a good feeling. Practice makes near perfect. I think the best way to learn is buy some cheap or broken diecasts and just start hacking into them

Lil update... Got a good coat of paint on it, it's rough and will be sanded and another coat put on. It will be black with flames. GLOSS :iceslolan

http://files.automotiveforums.com/gallery/watermark.php?file=/502/19897249mrc-int-01.jpg

Also got the carpet done, .20 sheet of felt and some Elmers glue :bigthumb: I also have fabric for the seats. Might get the interior done this weekend and another coat of paint before masking the flames.

:iceslolan Scallops would be much easier to stripe, but Ive got my mind set on the flames.

Been working on the interior a lil, got the front seat done.... now on to the back seat and the door panels. Hopefully I can get the rest of it done over the weekend. I'll post more pics when it's done.

This is only the first draft on the flames. This will need to be cleaned up a bit, and maybe simplified. This is going to be fun :screwy:. This car has a distinct body line down the side, makes it harder to draw out a design that doesn't clash with the lines. Almost like two different panels.

The pattern is for one half so I can duplicate it for the other side. The plan is to transfer the pattern to masking film, then apply it to the body... I hope

Thanks all ....

The fabric is Corduroy from WalMart, it comes in a few different colors. A fabric store prob has a better selection. The red trim is needelwork thread that comes in a ton of colors, It is just about the right size, it can also be thined by pulling out 1 or 2 threads and retwisting it. All glued in place with Elmers glue.

Im not diggin the tribals on that car. I think classic flames would work better for the era.

You're right, those classic flames fit the car for the era perfectly. IF... I were building to a set standard. But I like to be different, and the flames I have, to me, are not tribal flames. They are a bit looser and symmetric than tribal, though they do have the returns as you would see in tribal flames. They flow with the car pretty well. The tribal designs are more edgy with sharper corners and straighter lines, closer to lightning flames. Maybe mine are a cross between the two.

KustmAce
10-05-2004, 02:13 PM
Welp, dare to be different, thats what I always say. Your rod, your paint. Im just thinking that the way your interior looks, and if your still gonna use those wide whites, those flames are way too modern and "edgy" for that car. Seems to take away from teh smoooooooothness of it. Gives it a very crazy feel. And that doesnt go well with the rest of the car, IMO.

But, thats just my pair o' pennies.

cwmax
10-10-2004, 03:48 AM
Small delay ... Rather big problem. I had the body smoothed out and ready for masking for the flames, then dropped the hood chipping the front edge. :banghead: This wouldn't be a big deal since it would be painted over with the flame color. But... on closer inspection I noticed the finish color could easily be peeled off.

I had painted it flat black to start, then decided to go gloss. I simply painted over the flat black. Well it looks like the finished gloss black is not sticking to the flat black. The primer is stuck good to the metal and flat black to the primer. I used Walmart primer, the flat black was Duplicolor and the gloss black was Krylon. I'm guessing there's some incompatibility here.

So I will be stripping it down again and starting over. This time I am using Duplicolor from start to finish. I also have AutoAir automotive colors for the flames which I'll dig out and clean my airbrush for.

http://files.automotiveforums.com/gallery/watermark.php?file=/502/198972hoodpeel-01.jpg

Now I know I'll be stripping it down, I went ahead and polished out part of the top to see how smooth I could get it... MAN this is as good as it gets!!!! No orange peel, no fine scratches, like glass!! Too bad I muff'd it :banghead:
