installing a clutch

I have a '92 prelude s, and the clutch is fried. i cant even drive it. im wondering if it is hard to install? would it be fairly easy if i followed a chilton manual? how long, 1 or 2 days?

Get it done by a professional.

It's actually fairly easy, it just takes a hell of alot of steps. You will probably need a Helm's manual for it if you are new at it, proper tools, and a good jack. You'd be looking at a full weekend's worth under the car if you have to dink around with it. Replace or surface the flywheel while you're at it.

You can either take out the engine and go at the tranny from there (the longer, less painful way), or you can go at it underneath the car where the actual tranny is. I've tried it, it hurts, and you'll acquire many battle scars on your first try :wink:

I would just take it to a shop if you've only got a Chilton's.

just drop the tranny out - easiest that way... need a good set of jackstands and a jack to support the tranny while dropping - or an engine hoist. the clutch kit should come with a pressure plate - clutch disc - throwout bearing - and alignment tool. installation is the opposite of removal. make sure to fill the throwout bearing with bearing grease! i would recommend a helms manual for this project though... will give you step by step instructions IN DEPTH, and all the torque specs - part numbers - etc...

Yeah, but you do have to still get under there. It's times like these where I wish I had a big 'ol floor lift.

well i can take it into a shop and work on it in there. there is a floor lift and they do have all the tools. im fairly new at auto stuff, but i can get help from an instructor and friends. im guessing it will probably take a couple days but thats all right.

With the tires off and a floor jack it shouldnt be toooo bad, you might have to undo a couple of your engine mount bolts and tilt your engine to get your transmition out, but its hard to say. Before you do put in a new clutch, if you are going to get your old flywheel turned, call around to a bunch of machine shops, I found a place where I got mine turned for 30$s canadian, instead of 60 from one of the main engine rebuilders around, and the guy did a awesome job on it too.
