MPV 4cyl Auto Tranny

My 89 mazda slips a little going into second gear, I have the motor out and have rebuilt it. I wonder if I can go in the transmission and just repair the problem of the slipage. would that be the second gear band being worn out. I really cant afford to rebuild the whole thing, I have a little experience. Any advice would be apreciated. Thanks
