88 cherokee> knocking from the engine

I'm totally confused here. I have a loud knock ini the engine when I accelerate or climb hills. I just tore the engine block off and replace the hydraulic lifters and the cylinders have little or no carbon build up! i can pinpoint the knock to the valves at the front of the engine!

I'm wondering if replaceing the push rods and rocker arms would make any difference? when I have the engine on with the valve cover off there is ample oil spurting through the pushrod. the rods themself are nice and straight too and there it no give to the rocker arms when the engine is off. everything seems good!

is there anything else that I'm overlooking that can cause this??/
Oh ya its an 88 cherokee straight 6 4x4

I have a '92 cherokee laredo, and I believe we are having the same problem. If you are still watching your topic, could you give me some pointers if you have had any answers... Also, one thought, are the rockers loose or do they rattle when you move them by hand?

hey guys i have an 88 and for the longest time i thought i had a motor knock.. heres the kicker it was the torque converter the knock i had was a high clacking that speed up with the motor and would quiet for a milla second after rev. you may look more in to this guys. it sounded like it was from the engine

i was told in another post I created that it could be the camshaft and bearings that need to be replaced! however torque convertor sounds like a viable reason too. do you also have a problem with oil pressure lately too? when I come to a stop light my engine chugs a little and the oil pressure light flickers on and off!

Had the torque converter checked, not the prob... you think it's bearings? What would it cost to fix?

could be hard to say without seein' for myself though .. where did you have the torque con. checked i had three shops look at mine all said "nope torque con. is fine" i replaced it and no more knock! there could be some many things though its just hard to say over the computer..

I have a 1992 Jeep Cherokee Laredo. I have a loud engine knocking too. I have no compression in the first cylinder and low oil pressure. Am i looking at the same problem or does the compression issue change it completley? I was told it might be a blown cylinder head or broken valve seat. I'm very lost and ne help would be appreiciated.

well it looks like you need a rebuild hate to tell ya but the compression changes alot.. i would say with high miles do a full rebuild and save time.
