Hi, could some friendly person help me with which timing marks to use in setting ignition timing on an '88 Mazda B2200 pickup? Also, I just installed a new cylinder head & hope I used the correct marks to set the valve timing. The engine runs OK, but not as good as I'd like!!

Four things to check.
1. Set crankshaft pulley to TDC using mark on the lower timing belt cover.
2. At same time, camshaft pulley mark must be lined up with top mark in the back cover.
3. No. 1 piston (front) must be on the highest position. (use a long wooden dowel inserted in the #1 spark plug hole to see the piston movement)
4. Remove the distributor cap and check to make sure rotor is pointing on the #1 sparkplug wire in the cap.
If four items I mentioned checked out fine, your timing is set coreectly. Then use a timing light to check actual timing. With advancer vacuum hose disconnected at the distributor, set timing at 6-8 degrees advanced.
