breaking studs?

Has anyone had a problem with studs breaking on their 2000 LS? I have 20 inch wheels on my car and this is the reason they are breaking. If anybody else has rims and can tell me if this happens to them or how they stopped it please let me know. thanks

I torque mine to 100 ft-lbs and put a HUGE amount of lateral stess on them every time I drive. Never had an issue in almost 90K miles and five years... Running the OEM 17". Perhaps there is something wrong with the bolt holes or pattern of your wheels or lugnuts you're using...I can't see it being the weight of the wheels unless they're gawdawful heavy. What are they?

I broke mine when taking the wheels off, like the lug somehow became cross-threaded on the way off. Lincoln has changed the lugs since my '01 - the new ones do not feel as soft and mushy - hoping that will fix it.

do you think the 2001 studs will be able to fit with out making other mods. can i just swap out my old studs for the 2001s? the wheels are real heavy and the 2000 studs do feel real mushy and just snap.

I have a '00 LS on Stock 17's somehow the bolt was cross threaded n stapped off.

LSV820, yes, the studs will swap without modification since the hubs and wheels didn't change.

Yep - on my third set of tires too.... (<30k)

LSV820 - make sure to get the newer lug nuts.

Well my wifes valve stems have had problems with leaking, corrosion in the holes I think.
Anyway the tire guy said the lug nuts were rounding off and he was afraid to remove the one wheel.
So we tell the dealer, and they say theres a TSB and to bring it in for replacements.

Are these things plastic?

Is there somwhere I can print out this TSB? Our closest dealer is acting dumb on the issue.

Not plastic, but the Stainless cap that's crimped over the mild steel nut is too loose fitting and gets wonky if people get too overzealous with their 12 point impact sockets. I use 6 point sockets on a breaker bar or torque wrench and mine look like new five years and 85K miles later. The "new" nuts have a tighter fitting stainless cap that better resists deformation.
