Getting the Best Launch From an Auto..??

Lets say you where to race a straight 1/4 mile, with an automatic transmission.. whats the best way to get a good launch?? Simply flooring it on the GO doesn't do it.. Do you recomend holding the brake..and reving up to say 2500rpm's then letting off the brake (like mentioned in the racing with an automatic thread)..?? My thunderbird is 265 ftlbs torque @3200 rpm, when i floor it, and the needle hits exactly 3200, you feel that torque launch.. What if i was to hold the brake, and rev it to like 3000rpm, then let the brake go?? I'd probably burn out, or tear my rotors to thats not a good thing..

Well, what really brought this up, was me getting beat by a 96 SE maxima-manual of coarse, he beat me about 10 feet. Chirping gears good to..

thats what i do with my mom's car. i hold the brakes like you said, but the stall rpm on the torque convertor will only let me take it to about 2000rpms before it starts pulling.
you can get a higher stall torque converter that will let you hold the brakes and gas to like 4000rpm, which will help you(B&M makes them). you can do it on you stock convertor(but i dont know how high you can stall it).

yea, i know in my honda with the auto, if i put it in D3 instead of normal D(4) and hold the brake until the car starts to creep, then mash the gas and release the brake, i will get a nice high rpm start. but it took me many trips down the strip before i figured what was best for my car. all i can say is just keep trying different methods until you find something that works for your t-bird.

What I used to to do with my old car was the hold brakes and floor it. The car had really good brakes on (always new ;-) ). At the lite, I would slam the brakes to the ground, and then floor the gas right b4 the light turned green. Car wouldnt budge. When the lite turns green, let off the brake. However, peeling out with max RPMs is inevitable. Worked great tho with fresh brand new tires, not filled all the way. More traction with that.
