I bought some speakers and went to have them installed on my 1991 corolla and the install guy at Ultimate Electronics said that it isnt possible to install rear speakers. I am pretty unhappy at the moment because of this. I guess that there are two bars that connect to the trunk door that cannot be romoved. I was wondering what purpose they seve and why must they be there. The only thing they do is pivot back and forth when i close the trunk. Is there any other way to install rear speakers in that area without getting those ugly boxes that sit in the back wondow? Can i just romove the bars and cut holes to install speakers?

does your back seat fold down like a 50/50 split or 60/40?? My back seat is a 60/40, so if your back seat folds down you need to do that first. Then take off your 3rd brakelight cover. On the rear deck there are 4 plastic thumbtac-like screws that you can pry off with a flathead screwdriver.

The next part is pretty tricky depending on whether or not you want to decide to take off the rear bolt for the rear seatbelts. The rear deck is held in place by the rear side panels which are secured by a large bolt that also holds the rear seatbelts in place. I wasn't able to take off the rear right bolt, but was able to take off the rear left bolt. If you are successful in taking off both bolts, then you can pry off the rear deck. The rear speakers in my 1991 corolla are 5 1/4", top mount. I think you have to see how much clearance your new speakers's tweeter will be because there's only a certain clearance before the grill on the rear deck hits the tweeters.

I'm trying to search on these forums for a posting that claims you can put 6 1/2" speakers in because the 5 1/4" have no bass whatsoever and I replaced my factory speakers with Eclipse ones.

I was thinking of just splicing the wires and going with installing 6x9's placed in 6x9 boxes and mounting those with velcro in my trunk because I think they'd get stolen if I tried mounting them on the rear deck.
