Where can I find information on the internal workings of the steering gear on my 1989 crown vic 5.0. My power steering keeps going out and the fluid keeps heating up rapidly before the motor even has time to warm up. It got so hot the first time that it melted the cap off my pump and caught my ingnition wires on fire. I replaced the pump but the lines and fluid kept heating up and the steering wheel kept turning by itself while parked and idling. The pump is new so that can't be the problem. I bypassed the pump into a self recycling loop and just went with manual steering which seems to work fine. I can't figure anything else except the steering box itself.
"I don't know how the box on the end of the worm gear works where the lines feed in and i think that is where the problem lies. Where can i find info on this or does anyone have any advice? Please help."

The gear is infact, bad, and needs to be replaced.
There are precious few resources aside from actual factory training for steering gears.

thank you for your quick reply that was actually amazing response time. So in your opinion the problem is actually the gear and it needs to be replaced? The worm gear is ok but the box with two holes on the end of the worm gear is unopenable as far as I can tell. Would I have to replace the whole gear or can something be done with the box that the lines feed into?
